We will select five plants which will thrive on self-contained moss-stuffed wire forms--these selections will not need a separate container for roots, but will root within the mossed framework--and you must keep the moss moist to prevent STD (Sudden Topiary Death). We will select from such plants as the following which can root onto and into moist moss surfaces: Peperomia carpeting types, Begonia glabra and fagifolia, Scindapsus, Humata, miniature Alternantheras, Ficus pumila cultivars, Raphidophora, Hoya curtisii, kentiana and similar species, Dischidias, Senecio jacobsonii & implexus, Hedera 'Duckfoot,' 'Gnome,' 'Design,' 'Willie' and others, Impatiens repens, Pellionia, Barleria repens, Acalypha repens, Pilea depressa, microphylla prostrata, glauca, and others, Saxifrage, Selaginella krausiana cultivars, mini Tradescantia and Callisia, and so on--We can even offer "tufted" plants for the rooster's comb or the peacock's feathers such as Ophiopogon, Tillandsia, Acorus, Carex, or Pogonatherum (if you so indicate on your order). A steadily increasing demand for plants easily trained on forms (miniature espaliers) left bare ribbed--especially as these are trendy at plant show exhibitions currently--allows us the chance to select vining or trainable plants easily attached to your geometric or representational frames without your having to stuff them with moss. Very elegant three-dimensional visuals result. From a surface container for the roots, the following are easily trained upon bare metal or wooden (even plastic) forms: Cissus quinquangularis, rotundifolia, Lantana, Muehlenbeckia, Manettia, Trachleospermum, Cydista, Ficus 'Fred Boutin' & many others, Dioscorea, Kalanchoe beauverdii, Dischidia albida & milnei, Passiflora cuspidifolia, Abutilon 'Victory,' Senecio macrophylla cultivars, various Hoyas, as well as the traditional Jasminum and Rosemary wire frame wreaths. We strongly recommend Linda Yang's TOPIARIES & ESPALIERS as an excellent book to suggest sound groundrules and trouble shooting techniques so your topiary will be successful. 5 plants.
Some of you grow only indoors, some only in terrariums; many of you have hobby greenhouses; while a growing number of customers live in subtropical or tropical areas of the world. These brief codes are an attempt to suggest whether or not a particular plant will do well in your particular conditions.
If an entry has the cluster HP CGH, this means normal house plant culture will be successful if the plant is given a cool CGH moist location; however if the entry has the cluster CGH HP, you would interpret this to suggest that while Cool Greenhouse conditions are needed for total success with this plant, House Plant conditions will be adequate, while not ideal. If the cluster is HH CGH you would interpret this to mean that while in Zone 8 or below this will be winter hardy outdoor, further north it will need considerable mulch, a cold frame, or a Cool Greenhouse to thrive. And so on.
