I: WINTER BLOOMS FOR THE HOUSE

Winter Bloomers House Plant Types

99067 WINTER BLOOMERS [5 HOUSE PLANT TYPES] PRICE: $22.00 .Mainly old Victorian favorites also, but these are plants that often need a bright winter window or a cool to moderate temperature window to perform best. Remember blooming plants do need good light. This collection reflects our choice. If you desire specific plants, order them by stock number from the following list of Winter blooming house plants.

52020 AECHMEA GAMOSEPALA BRO HP TGH PRICE: $5.50 "Bottlebrush Bromo" Compact, rapidly-clustering urns with erect bottlebrush spikes studded with clove-shaped reddish bracts tipped with electric magenta petals. Easy house plant for the windowsill.

52118 AECHMEA RECURVATA HYBRID BRO HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.75 A very bold upright hybrid with tight clustered fls of pink green & russett; rapidly clustering / offsetting to form a soft porcupine hemisphere. Best grown with the high light of Tillandsia culture--indeed until it blooms, quite typically mistaken for a terrestial Tillandsia.

20402 AESCHYNANTHUS LOBBIANUS GES HP CGH PRICE: $4.25 Elliptical leaves ranked on arched, cascading stems terminating with clusters of upright flowers: each maroon cupped calyx holding a blood red "Lipstick Vine" blossom--typically blooming only once a year; these are very small starters.

20016 AESCHYNANTHUS MICRANTHUS VARIEGATE GES HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 "Variegated Himalayan Lipstick Plant" The leathery glossy foliage emerges with ivory-white striations which fades with time into bright lime brushings--striking with the intense small red-purple flowers. Easily grown small statured species prefering cooler temperatures to produce the best variegation. While most Aeschynanthus produce heavy outarching stems gradually elongating until they cascade down (and thus best displayed as an older specimen in a hanging basket), this species is more delicately statured, quite at home in a tall pot on your windowsill or in your lightgarden. Always popular as is easily bloomed and tends to survive the occassional watering (underwatering?) mishap.

20486 AESCHYNANTHUS SPECIOSUS USDA CLONE GES HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.50Large succulent leathery leaves ranked on stiftly arched stems terminating in showy clusters of erect large blossoms, with yellow bases shading to orange, then red at mouth with black commas at each lobe: thus earning the title of "Winter Ornament Plant"; like other Aeschynanthus (and unlike the Columnea which need to be recut annually) this dramatic easily grown Gesneriad gradually forms a magnificant specimen by gradually clumping into a vase shape of many out-arching strong stems, not needing to be re-started with new cuttings to survive.

56467 BEGONIA ART HODES [HYB] BEG TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 scandent] Martin Johnson hyb with very wide pebbled leaves with pale branching veins and fine reddish hairs; unusually beautiful & unique sometimes seen as 'Antholes.' A spectacular specimen in the conservatory, yet quite a remarkable addition to a shady summer windowbox or urn as well even though the modest clusters of white flowers typically appear only midwinter.

56707 BEGONIA CHERRIES AND CHOCOLATE [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.75 (rex/rz) Small saturated easily grown clumping mound of beautifully marbled mahogany black leaves with pecan tones, highlighted with bright pewter brushings amplified by the dramatic cherry red underleaves. Amazingly vigorous and undemanding.

56024 BEGONIA CONVOLVULACEA BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 (trailing) The "Grape Leaf Begonia" with big glossy sharply lobed leaves shingling the scandent stems; enormous pendant flower heads in late winter are most impressive. Easy. Unmatched for a substantial hanging basket statement. Given support (does not need encouragement) this clean cut beauty can easily cover a wall with fabulous shingled glossy foliage.

56028 BEGONIA CORALLINA DE LUCERNA [HORT] [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.00 (cane) Traditional "Angel Wing Begonia" w/ deeply lobed leaves dotted silver; pendulous salmon rose flower clusters. We do not ship the unlobed clone--this Logee's clone is similar or identical to 'Sophie Cecile' according to several California collectors.

56037 BEGONIA ERYTHROPHYLLA [HYB] BEG HP GHP PRICE: $ 3.50 (rz) "Beefsteak Beg." Waxy rounded leaves reddish beneath. Easy and reliable and beautiful AND the one probably flourishing on your grandmother's windowsill.

56285 BEGONIA GINNY [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.00 (s) Small featured shrubby hybrid with pink-toned fabuously felted wing-shaped leaves, rouged a flirtin' red beneath; recurring pearl fading to pale pink flowers with red beards, the male flowers somewhat serrate edged; forms a tight cluster of short stems beautifully foliaged, given good light and organic fertilizer. The attractively haired foliage allows this to acclimate to less humid conditions than tolerated by most Beonias.

56050 BEGONIA GLABRA BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 (trailing/scandent) "Mini Grapeleaf" glossy grass-green leaves on strong scandant vine terminating in clusters of shell pink flowers. Also offered as B. procumbens on West Coast (we do offer the true procumbens/limmingheana in this listing below). This brightly cheerful winner readily forms clinging hair roots along its stems and happily clings to and covers even a concrete wall with shingled waxy leaves accented in late winter with outarched blossom clusters; thus, very popular as a solid cover for mossed topiary forms. Alternately, an interesting small foliaged vine cascading from a hanging basket or windowbox.

56282 BEGONIA LOIS BURKS [HYB] BEG CGH HP PRICE: $ 3.25 (c) Much-branched low-grower with lovely angelwing foliage strewn with silver. The very showy shell pink spring blossoms repeat when given ample light. Easy beautiful basket plant; excellent choice for the windowsill.

56088 BEGONIA ODORATA ALBA BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Sprays of small white fragrant flowers; glossy ovate leaves spaced on a big boned gal of a specimen plant. Needs elbow room to flourish, but the subtle sweet scents are ample payment from this Caribbean shrub.
54059 BEGONIA TORCH [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 (c) Bright red fl clusters on stout stems flanked with thick emerald angelwing leaves revealing red laquered undersides. While a compactly statured Cane, not a true dwarf.

52054 BILLBERGIA CHER [HYB] BRO HP CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 Jerry Raack's striking hybrid of `Fantasia' with euphemiae rubra: spotted reddish purple tall slim urns with each leathery leaf arched at the very tip; deeply arching long inflorescenceorescence with bracts and blossoms of pink, violet and ochre. A most impressive specimen in time; yet of easy culture.

52051 BILLBERGIA NUTANS BRO HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 "Queen's Tears" Narrow silver-bronze leathery leaves overlap tightly to form slender vases from which arch "weeping" flowerstalks with rose, green & violet "tear" flowers like "Indoor Oats." Tolerant of adverse conditions--always popular because the lovely inflorescenceorescences appear without fail every winter.

52053 BILLBERGIA PYRAMIDALIS STRIATA BRO HP TGH PRICE: $ 8.00 Red flowered "Summer Torch"; irregularly yellow-banded stiff leathery leaves tightly overlap into an impressively outflared erect urn of striped foliage. Impressive yet easily grown Bromeliad equally at home as a windowsill or a hobby greenhouse citizen.

20643 CHIRITA DIANE MARIE [HYB] GES TGH TERR PRICE: $ 6.25 Strikingly beautiful houseplant forming a rumpled rosette like posie of thick jadelike silver surfaced leaves with pewter line and serrate margins; many nodding lavender slipper flowers with flared mouth revealing maroon lines and lemon throat.

20463 CHIRITA SINENSIS HISAKO [HYB] GES HP TERR PRICE: $ 4.50 Flared rosette of very succulent serrated leaves richly traced with silver, from which rise stout stems with soft lavender pouched flaring blossoms of considerable substance. Handsome Nakayama hybrid more free-flowering than species clones. Certainly one of the easiest of all houseplants, equally at home in the windowsill, terrarium, or greenhouse/plantroom--but most smashingly splendid when grown under lights. When customers "cut down" on the number of their pet houseplants, this is never tossed out!

51017 CLIVIA MINIATA GRANDIFLORA AMARY HP CGH PRICE: $ 8.50 "Belgian Hybrid Clivia" The usual commercial selection with large umbels of orange-red fls, throated yellow, over very attractive deep evergreen leathery strap leaves. Unparalleled as a flowering houseplant.

Easy hobby greenhouse plant as popular with growers today as with Victorian gardeners for the impressive display of mid winter blossoms. Sometimes this is classified as a Plectranthus. Very beautiful, very easy to grow--but remember this is a winter performer.

60262 CRASSULA MULTICAVA CRA HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.50 Pairs of wide flat oval hazy green leaves peppered and dimpled in purple-red on thick stems; mid-winter masses of starry pinkish-white blossoms sometimes in such numbers to often topple these pinkish stems, thus the "Fairy Crassula" in European trade. Very reliable mid-winter blossom sprays are hopelessly charming.

60288 CRASSULA SARMENTOSA MEDIO-PICTA CRA HP CGH PRICE: $ 3.25 Cascading succulent stems punctuated with pairs of rounded coarsely toothed waxed leaves with creamy-greengold central stripes--this sport originated in our greenhouses in the mid seventies and remains popular in the trade today.

61008 CRASSULA WOODII CRA HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Petite tumbling tinkertoy stems set with multitudes of paired tiny fat leaves; cute tuffet for a planter. Always popular. The perfect tuffet for the base of a succulent bonsai.

51287 EUCHARIS CHRISTINE AMARYL HP PRICE: $ 8.50 The excellent extremely fragrant "Compact Amazon Lily" with slimmer tighter foliage than the species grandiflora, yet large wax white daffodil shaped flowers are produced in considerable numbers once the offsetting bulbs reach a mature size thanks to your providing a warm richly fertilized mix with bight indirect light; good for conditions too warm for its Amaryllis cousins--thus a perfect sunny window houseplant easily bloomed.

51040 EUCHARIS GRANDIFLORA [AMAZONICA] AMARY HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Amazon Lily" Highly scented white waxy fls like nodding daffodils held above glossy deep green leaves; ideal houseplant for a room too warm for its amaryllis cousins to thrive.

67759 EUPHORBIA FULGENS [JAQUINIFLORA] EUP HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 Mexican "Scarlet Plume" with slender stems arching under the slim attractive foliage and scarlet orange pseudo-petaled blossoms which last for months--the winter red bracts cluster in the leaf axils for a charming look. Remember this old Victorian favorite must have full sun to mature and no stray lite in the fall (like its kissin cousin, the Poinsettia) or it will fail to set buds for the charming winter display. Once again the old is new as many of you have told us that they have been searching for the "Scarlet Plume" for years.

99697 EUPHORBIA: the CROWN OF THORNS COLLECTION: This collection can include some of the dwarf species in this group of plants, like Euphorbia francoisii to add to the diversity of this collection. Unlike the "Dutch" hybrids mass marketed today, this fabulous heirloom maintains evergreen variegated strap foliage and regularly blooms each year, especially as the roots become more restricted.

51003 HIPPEASTRUM PAPILIO AMARY HP CGH PRICE: $ 8.75 "Butterfly Amaryllis" Nearly evergreen glossy strap leaves; heads of red fls flamed with creamy white. Show stopper. Does not require a "dormant" period to bloom, thus an easy houseplant always maintaining its attractive foliage.

Excellent foliage of deep green ruffled leaves on strong rigidly erect canes; easily produces its typically solitary flower if provided richly fertilized warm soil, bright light and even levels of humidity; avoid chill to prevent flower bud drop.

40424 JASMINUM SAMBAC MAID OF ORLEANS OLE HP TGH PRICE: $ 8.00 This "Arabian Jasmine" clone has semi-double flowers of rich fragrance on woody shrubs with pale foliage; considered the best for houseculture by the Elberts--certainly the easiest to bloom indoors. The famous J.s. `Multiplex' in French perfume; traditionally the Chinese use this attractive form to give fragrance to green tea.
60374 KALANCHOE BEAUVERDII HYBRID CRA HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Gray green noodle leaves in rigid opposite pairs with ridged tips producing adventituous plantlets, on scrambling wiry stems. Clusters of pendant glossy olive calyx bells, each with shiny salmon-pink petals with violet-speckled rims--quite a midwinter show. (Possibly a distinct species as yet unidentified for us.)

68480 KALANCHOE BOSSFELDIANA CITRINA CRA HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Wide clumping dark rubbery foliage of large scalloped leaves create a perfect backdrop for the extravagantly produced showy clusters of upfacing golden yellow blossoms opening for an extended "Golden Flaming Katie" winter show.
60386 KALANCHOE DAIGREMONTIANA CRA HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.25 "Life Plant" or "Mother of Thousands" Plantlets form on the crenulated margins of the liver-green triangular fleshy leaves, spotted reddish-brown; heads of pendant pinkish midwinter blossoms gradually fade to a delicate gray-violet hue. Formerly in the genus Bryophyllum, appropriate as the Latin translates to "sprouting leaves." SW Madagascar native of easy culture if given sufficient light. This may be as common as dirt (according to one customer who obviously has lost her inner child), yet every kid loves this handsome dame. And an important postscript: For those who love their turtles--remember that little tortoises with runny noses should try this as a cure.

60389 KALANCHOE FEDTSCHENKOI CRA HP CGH PRICE: $ 1.75 "Purple Scallops" Amethyst, flour-dusted scalloped leaves are margined purple with brownish notches producing adventitious buds in sufficient light and humidity; elegant terminal clusters of pendant khaki-pink flowers appearing late winter. Madagascar native. Very attractive; easily grown given good light.

60394 KALANCHOE HOUGHTONII [HYB] CRA HP TGH PRICE: $ 2.75 Also K. poincarei. "Good Luck Plant" A hybrid "Life Plant" of daigremontiana x tubiflora with tan-pink channeled slim leaves (distinctly wider and flatter than tubiflora) with purple designs and toothed margins producing many adventitious plantlets. Easy favorite with very showy rigid umbles of down turned blossoms mid-winter. Certainly the easiest "Life Plant" to grow.

60407 KALANCHOE OBTUSA CRA HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.75 Attractive broad succulent leaves on very short stems beautifully accent and frame the hemispheres of upfacing brick-red flowers. Attractive compact bouquet from Tanzania. Marvelous tuffet outline gradually branching with time; certainly the most flower power for the foliar size and thus astoundingly popular both as an indoor windowsill potplant blooming midwinter when bright flowers are most needed, and as a petite compact greenhouse subject. Not to be confused with the taller stalked blossfeldiana crew with their smaller flower clusters.

60410 KALANCHOE PINNATA CRA HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.50 "Air Plant" or "Miracle Leaf" Most famous "Bryophyllum" for the notched leaves produce clinging adventitious plantlets even when wrenched from the stout stems and pinned to a curtain. (And if you remember those ads and drawings in the Sunday paper, you have dated yourself considerably.) Native to an astounding range geographically--Americas, Australia, Asia, Africa, etc. Forms a handsome upright succulent subshrub with curious winter flowers; a basic houseplant from Victorian times, still in demand today by kids of all ages.

60409 KALANCHOE PROLIFERA CRA HP TGH PRICE: $4.75 "Blooming Boxes" Maroon-rimmed stout rubbery fishbone leaves rigidly ranked on handsome erect trunks; terminal inflorescence of yellow flowers, each peeping from a bizarre dangling four-sided box-like bract, followed by a "proliferation" of plantlets. Madagascar native with the "Byrophyllum" urge--but adventituous plantlets form more typically on the ripe inflorescenceorescence rather than on the ridged edges of the succulent leaves ( this species must have seen a slide show of Agaves somewhere along the line). Rather curiously, this rubbery, extremely handsome, sculpture has become quite popular as an addition to summertime urns as an accent plant in recent years. If planted directly in your greenhouse's floor, this gentle giant can easily top eight feet by the time its enormous candelabra of blossoms crowns the succulent trunk.

60427 KALANCHOE TUBIFLORA [DELAGOENSIS] CRA HP TGH PRICE: $ 2.75 "Hollywood Palm" or "Chandelier Plant" Erect pinkish stems thickly hung with pendant cylindric dark leaves spotted reddish brown and emerald and tipped with notches nurturing bundles of plantlets; pale red bellflowers pendant mid winter from elaborate terminal inflorescenceorescence. Madagascar native. The second photo is not good, but it shows the flowers.

Much prized by collectors.

67331 MONADENIUM COCCINEUM EUP HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 "Masai Spurge" slender angled stems with scarlet to pink showy cymes--these bright hooded fls open near thanksgiving and still are colorful at Easter! The serrate-edged keeled leaves are deciduous. Popular.

40685 OSMANTHUS FRAGRANS OLE TGH CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Sweet Olive" Leathery-leaved shrub; clusters of small white fls emit a delightful rare fragrance "blending jasmine, ripe apricots & gardenia" used in China to scent tea. Himalayan native's leaf edges burn if humidity insufficient or if watered with a source high in salts or a watersoftener. Not a houseplant unless sufficient humidity is provided.

60534 PACHYPODIUM SAUNDERSII APO HP TGH PRICE: $ 12.50 "Star of Lundi" Thick clubfoot caudiform bases--smooth bark of silver-gray--taper to branches covered with spur shoots covered with deciduous deep green leaves, each flanked with needle-like spines; white flared blossoms. 40800 PELARGONIUM HORTORUM GROSSERSORTEN GER HP CGH PRICE: $ 2.25 Dwarf somewhat waxy leaves zoned deep purple on short much-branched stems topped with airy clear salmon pink flowers--heavy winter bloomer. Cute and easy self branching hybrid more correct as 'Groszer Garten'--after it performs with abandon on a sunny windowsill all winter, stick some cuttings in your windowbox for a full summer display. Older long term pots can grow waist high in several years' time.

56562 PELARGONIUM HORTORUM PLATINUM GER HP CGH PRICE: $ 3.75 Salmon toned scarlet single scarlet flowers arise above the quite odd waffled pale milky green rounded leaves with evenly cut creamy white margins; wide oddly angular mounding habit. A sport of 'Frank Headley' from Heidgen.

40790 PELARGONIUM STELLAR BIRD DANCER GER HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.25Stout-stemmed dwarf with petite zagged, deeply cut (one could say "pinked") leaves with parallel dramatic dark ric-rac zones; marvelous salmon red fls with apricot overtones are extrememly zagged--each flower cluster constituting tiny floral fireworks. The most popular Geranium here at the greenhouses for small dish gardens and pseudo-bonsai work.

41670 PELARGONIUM STELLAR GOLDEN STAPH GER HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Showy bright golden-ochre leaves with faint rust-red zone; odd japped orange-pink flowers create starburst heads.
