As a number of our longterm customers regularly ask about availability of plants once offered in past catalogues (we suspect that many of you have more complete year-by-year collections of those newsprint compilations than we do), we have re-listed many in the following offerings this year; furthermore, we've been propagating many new treasures from the main collections as well as readying choice new plants sent to us by those of you who love to collect and hybridize and wish to share your treasures with the rest of us. And, as usual, you will note that we like to name these new cultivars and hybrids after you! Since our customers continue to increase their interests and expand their displays of the wondrous TROPICAL LOOK in their outdoor gardens, we have added many new flashy items for this look--odd new Aroids, unusual Agave cousins, a variegated Tomato, dramatic strong boned Begonias, some very showy mints and new (to us) Acanthus family members. So tart up your urns & planters unabashedly; shamelessly pump up those perennial beds. We have also continued to expand plant selections in increasingly popular categories: tropical bonsai plants, cultivars suited for standards & topiary, tried & true succulents suited for wreaths or dish gardens, new distinctive material to try in your windowboxes or urns, and reliable yet choice terrarium subjects. (The sheer number of terrariums and wardian cases you purchased from us last year still amazes and impresses us.) Meanwhile, we have not forgotten our core support group (many of whom have been ordering /supporting us for well over 20 years now) who need new treasures for their hobby greenhouses & conservatories; their extensive lite gardens & plantrooms, and especially those who need a regular fix of an astounding new variegated selection (over a dozen new variegated cultivars are offered in the following list--as well as in the succulent and hardy plants sections--for the first time this year). For those who have just finished their first greenhouse, or have booted out the last offspring and now have an entire plant room, please remember that we have you in mind by offering the popular #99029 Introductory GREENHOUSE COLLECTION: BEGINNER & HOBBYIST featuring 50 different labeled plants for only $150.00, as well as #99030 THE GREENHOUSE: ADVANCED COLLECTION including more unique speciality plants for the jaded grower. These 50 rare labled plants for only $250.00 have often been ordered for botanic gardens needing a wild selection for their supporting sales benches, as well as municipal conservatories interested in expanding their display sections while keeping within tight budgets. A reminder to our many Southern customers: most of the plants coded CGH (for Cool GreenHouse) are excellent choices for your permanent plantings even though they are summertime bedding or greenhouse plants in our Zone 6b climate.

You will notice an ever increasing number of individual photos & images this season--the attempt to illustrate nearly every plant we list continues--and we do thank profusely those of you who have sent photos we can use as so many of our older stock plants show the effect of many cuttings and airlayerings, resulting in less than typical stature for that particular species and/or cultivar--and all of us enjoy seeing how you have potted and combined your plant treasures. We have always learned more from our faithful customer friends than we have from all our book referencces. Nonetheless: We also offer many books with great photos & discussions of the bulk of the plants we try to keep in propagation in order to support your hobby. Our "Common Names index" is now also on our website, so you can quickly locate any plant we offer (and some we may no longer keep in stock) if the technical Latin name eludes you. (We are the major users of this handy memory aid!) Again, please realize that if you can only bring yourself to order from an older outdated catalogue or listing, we will try to find and propagate some of the out-of-stock items if possible; however, this will obviously delay your order considerably--if you feel that constant calls to our office staff is necessary while we attempt to give your special needs special consideration, we will need to cancel your order at that point. Too many orders go out each day for us to find time to search for ongoing paperwork.

We would like to remind those who find the seemingly endless lists of Latin plant nomenclature on the following pages to cause eyestrain followed by serious headaches that a solid introductory collection of plants just may be available within your initial interest area from such possibilities as:

52205 ABROMETIELLA BREVIFOLIA [DEUTEROCOHNIA] BRO HP TGH $ 12.00 Hard broadly hemispherical mounds made of multiple columns of tightly packed succulent gray-flecked/scurfed lvs; clumps of bright coppery beak-like fls with protruding yellow stamens; this species seems to have been born on the nearly rainless (but much fogged) cost of Chile (and on into the more exposed northern area of Argentina) in order to perfectly perform in your tropical trough! Visually, this is quite close to the much more easily grown A. chlorantha, which follows.

52207 ABROMETIELLA CHLORANTHA [DEUTEROCOHNIA] BRO HP TGH $ 5.00Tidy compact carpets of multiple rosette heads of grayish green--each crowded succulent leathery leaflet tipped with a somewhat flexible spine & lined with teeth. Green flowered bromel from rocky exposed areas of Argentina making a wonderful accent plant in any succulent collection or as a base for a caudiform bonsai. Recently creating a stir among those of you who enjoy creating whimsical topiaries.

52259 ABROMETIELLA LORENTZIANA [DEUTEROCOHNIA] BRO HP TGH $ 8.00Smooth-edged succulent leaves, spine tipped, with dull glossed silvery leather surfaces packed in tight elongated rosettes branching to form extensive rine gray hard edged sadistic cushions. Whew! Small green bromel beaked blossoms in tidy clusters; native to rock crevices of Argentina. Daunting.

54474 ABUTILON HYBRIDUM HARDY ORANGE MALV CGH $ 7.25A clone shared with us by Raulston somewhat root hardy in the South: odd rangy habit with dangling bronze-orange blossoms; survives Z8 if given a long hot summer in order to establish a heavy root mass below winter 's eventual frost line; seems to produce blossoms more consistently in warmer temperatures than most selections. Not particullary showy in Northern gardens as needs intense light to perform well. Possibly the original clone designation for the cultivar now known as 'Marion Stewart.'

42276 ABUTILON HYBRIDUM LINDA VISTA MAL CGH HP $ 5.50 Beautiful nodding flowers an unusual shade of bronze orange with a striking red center and sometimes pale carmine veins. Very erect habit excellent for topiary work. Outstanding in a cool greenhouse with lots of sun as this hybrid reaches its height of bloom mid-winter.

42263 ABUTILON HYBRIDUM SAVITZII MALV CGH $ 5.75 Leaf almost entirely white with small central green flame; pale bronzy salmon fls dangle from the tall stems. Best grown in very bright light in a cool greenhouse in intense climates as can burn in the heat of the deep South. But in zones with smaller numbers this not only performs in the winter greenhouse but forms a magnificant specimen in the summer garden or in container combinations as it flourishes in container culture given regular water and ample fertilizer.

40005ABUTILON HYBRIDUM YELLOW CHIMES MAL HP CGH $ 4.50 Yellow out angled, nodding bellflowers with ochre clappers accent this vigorous "Flowering Maple" with soft fresh green leaves on self branching stems. Possibly a summer blooming selection of England's 'Moonchimes.' Has the reputation among our customers as being one of the few performing well in a midwinter sunny window.

40006 ABUTILON MEGAPOTAMICUM VARIEGATUM MAL HP CGH $ 4.50 Trailing gold-flecked lvs over rows of lemon "Japanese Lantern" fls with burnt orange stamens & red lantern caylx. The variegation will disappear during summer heat (even a warm greenhouse will result in solid green foliage), although the somewhat laterally oriented branchlets will continue to display their cute lantern blossoms given bright light and evenly moist soil. Difficult to keep in bloom during warm nighttime temperatures; those in the warm south or warm greenhouse need to expect green foliage. While this species is noted for its wide spreading (rather hoirizontal) growth habit; the following species develops an upright vertical shrub.

40007 ABUTILON STRIATUM AUREO-MACULATUM MAL HP CGH $ 4.50 Soft maple leaves richly flecked gold on a tightly branched shrub sporting many salmon bellflowers; striking in annual beds. Deservedly the most popular "Flowering Maple" as it is a brilliant display whether in flower or not; most effective when grown with plants displaying purple toned foliage. An unexpectedly subtle addition to outdoor summer beds, lighting up its companion plantings; although popular traditionally as a strong performer in the winter hobby greenhouse or plantroom as it reaches its peak blooming cycle late winter.

50565 ABUTILON VICTOR REITER [HYB] $ 6.50 Erect woody stems festooned with spectacularly big nodding blossoms of festive tangerine; this "Giant Chime Flowering Maple" can be kept as a modest heavily flowering pot plant, or encouraged to easily reach 8' --thus perfect for training into standards or for backgrounds in the deep south. Blooms for a very long period as is sterile--often trained as a tropical nearly everblooming shrub, although easily scaled down with carefully considered pruning of the central leads. This is the only Abutilon our customers report reasonable success with good flowering even when grown in less than full sun.

41253 ABUTILON VICTORY [HYB] MAL HP CGH $ 4.75 Reiter hybrid of A. megapotamicum with strongly held laterally weeping branches perfectly displaying the charming show of ranks of dangling flared large yellow blossoms highlighted by darker-toned throat, as long as not exposed to considerable warmth year round. Perfect for hanging baskets, most impressive in windowboxes or tall urns when a bold horizontal plane is imperative in your design scheme. We like it because it blooms even on into the initial heat of our Ohio River Valley summer heat--something we cannnot claim for other A. megapotamicum cultivars.

Copper Leaf Plants (ACALYPHA) for the 2008 SEASON

.

The Copper Leaf Plant Family: A dramatic genus of Euphorbia cousins flaunting some of the most shamelessly colorful and elaborately furled foliage designs of the wilkesiana group delivering major visual impact for your conservatory greenhouse, or for summer urns. Several with less dramatic foliage in the hispida complex remain the most popular of blooming tropicals with remarkably attractive (and oh so touchable) pendant catkins; furthermore, several miniature forms are becoming favorites with tropical bonsai trainers as they have very reduced leaf sizes with autumn colors on stems soon mimicing woody turnks. For best results, give full sun, constant warmth, and well drained but adequately moist soil. If you plant these directly into wet chill soil, they will quickly rot. We promise--having terminated some by not practicing what we preach.

99752 ACALYPHA COLLECTION (5 PLANTS) We can put together a five plants collection of various types. Let us know if you will be growing these in a greenhouse, house, or as outdoor container subject for your patio or deck so we can gather an appropriate selection. $20.00 .

40009 ACALYPHA HISPIDA EUP HP TGH $ 5.75 Upright stems hold long red "Chenille Plant" pendant catkins throughout the year; this "Philippine Medusa" or "Red-hot Cattail" shrub needs bright light and warm conditions. *We hope to offer the buff toned catkin cultivar further distinguished by the white edged leaf again by this fall--we did promise this last year; however, all sold at the greenhouses here before we could list them. Watch the tropical speciality list for these.

41930 ACALYPHA REPENS STRAWBERRY FOXTAIL EUP HP TGH $ 4.25 "Strawberry Firetail/Foxtail"--(hispaniola) Trailing slim stems disappear beneath the small lvs and rosy pink velvety "Tails" which mimic their "Chenile" brethern--resembling roseate chenile pendant woolyworms fat on steroids. These terminally cute critters are splendid additions to any urn or windowbox as well as hanging baskets as they spill over the edge with masses of fluffy soft red catkins as long as bright light and warm temperatures assure their formation. Our customers report this to be one of the best choices for a sunny indoor windowsill, lite gardening setup, or hobby greenhouse container as it will be nearly everblooming in such a site. This will not bloom in low light or cool conditions.

67906ACALYPHA SIAMENSIS FIRESTORM [INFERNO] EUP TGH HP $ 5.75A most arrestingly colored miiature: good in combinations as develops a constantly dividing habit with multiple branching stemlets brilliantly cloaked by shrimp pink with bronze overtoned yet ochre leaves, wider and more shimmery than those of its close cousin "Kilauea." Extremely sensitive to chill. Needs absolutely full sun to develop foliar color.

41525 ACALYPHA WILKESIANA KILAUEA EUP HP $ 4.25 "Miniature Fire-dragon" Very tiny spindle-shaped lvs of dusky red and coppery rose with creamy feathered margins; much branching dwarf forming small mounds. With limited light the foliage turns clear ochre with dusky pink; the best choice for the sunny WARM windowsill location.

40012 ACALYPHA WILKESIANA GODSEFFIANA HETEROPHYLLA EUP HP TGH $ 5.75Massed finely cut astoundingly slim leaves edged in rich cream on elegant seldom branched stems present a striking weeping "Lance Copperleaf" with very distinct vertical statement (ideal for training into a standard) perfectly displaying the exceptionally slim ribbon leaves cascading elegantly. Very little lateral growth. Can be extremely dramatic as an exclamation point in an urn or windowbox design.

42009 ACALYPHA WILKESIANA HALEAKALA EUP TGH HP $ 10.00 Large furled solid copper purple lvs with a deeply fingered elaborate filigree edge--appropriately named for the Maui volcano noted for its watery cascades eroding extremely deep valleys. Very unique selection with a distinct urge to grow ever upward--modest pinching of tips assures a wide dramatic show of incredible foliage. Must have sun, strong fertilizer and adequate moisture (while perfectly drained) and constant warmth to maintain its breathtaking appearance.

40017 ACALYPHA WILKESIANA MACAFEANA TAHITI EUP TGH $ 20.00 Rumpled coppered leaves with gold dustings, pink margins fade to parchment blond when give full sun; rare selection which is a good performer in the conservatory in a sunny location. Best for the collector as very chill sensitive.

59213 ACALYPHA WILKESIANA MACROPHYLLA EUP TGH $ 5.00 "Heart Copperleaf" Large russet lvs with long pointed leaves extending from the cordate tops, bronze-green & copper tones--this is the best quick growing cultivar for outdoor borders, for showy urns and big windowboxes as it makes a big bold statement very quickly. Given free root run in a conservatory, this dramatic griant soon becomes a coppery pink tree. A fab "Cheap Chic" addition to your summer garden--will perform dramatically where ever you have good luck with the sun Coleus tribe.

40015 ACALYPHA WILKESIANA OBOVATA CRISTATA EUP TGH $ 7.00 Spectacular ruffled & fluted "Copper Swirl" lvs serrated & highlighted in pink, bronze, red; famous even in late Victorian gardening as the splendid and dramaticly foliaged "Ceylon Plant." More demanding of warmth and full sun than the similar 'Hoffmanii.' Certainly (and deservedly) the most popular color and disposition of the tribe being the ultimate "flounced skirt" foliage for your over the top urn designs, window dressings or conservatory showoff.

42079 ACALYPHA WILKESIANA PETTICOAT EUP TGH HP $ 6.00 Each ruffled coppery ochre leaf margined with parchment toned scallops--most furled leaves of any cultivar we know--excellent conservatory subject where it receives the high humidity, bright light and constant warmth this cultivar demands in order to stay startling. (We believe this excellent performer shared with us by Longwood Gardens to be a selection of 'Hoffmanii' showing stronger growing patterns and more tolerance of chill and shade.)

41955 ACALYPHA WILKESIANA RAGGEDY ANN EUP HP TGH $ 7.00 Brazenly flashy "Razzle Dazzle Plant" with woody decorative stems achchoring large deeply lobed irregularly twisted leaves with saw toothed edges accentuating the deep maroon tones highlighted with deeply disturbed bronzes and reds--no two leaves ever display the same outline. Remarkably dramatic as a specimen pot plant; great textural and color contrast in a mixed urn.

31714 ACALYPHA WILKESIANA REX EUP TGH HP $ 5.25 Distinctive "King Kopperleaf" from our Cajin friends with tall wand-like stems heavily cloaked with elongated bronze foliage, tipped creamy green and parchment rose--rather delicate tones within this bold and brassy crew. Extremely sensitive to chill; can only ship this delicately featured cultivar during the warmest months.

ACANTHUS species for the 2008 SEASON
The ACANTHUS FAMILY: An outstanding alliance of successful house & conservatory plants newly popular as these spectacular characters are being reintroduced into summer beds & containers. Notice the family code ACAN in this catalogue & specialty lists featuring (from over 250 genera) the following genera: Acanthus, Aphelandra, Asystasia, Barleria, Baphicacanthus, Chamaeranthemum, Crossandra, Dicliptera, Eranthemum, Hypoestes, Graptophyllum, Fittonia, Hemigraphis, Justicia, Mackaya, Odontonema, Pachystachys, Peristrophe, Porphyrocoma, Pseuderanthemum, Ruellia, Ruttya, Sanchezia, Sciaphyllum, Scutellaria, Stenandrium, Strobilanthus, Thunbergia, Whitfieldia, and Xantheranthemum. (Whew!) If you collect plants with showy flowers or stunning foliage, you already have some of these high performers. And always popular for those prefering their species to be polysyllabic.
99405 ACANTHUS FAMILY COLLECTION (1O PLANTS) Let us know if you will be growing these in a greenhouse, tall terrarium, houseplants, or as outdoor container subjects so that we can select appropriately from our wide ranging stocks of this wide ranging tribe. Sort of a Who's Who of stunning foliage and showy flowers. $35.00 .

50002 ACANTHUS MONTANUS FRIELING'S SENSATION ACAN TGH $ 15.00 A variegated selection by Ken Frieling here at the GHW of "False Thistle" with yellow marbled deeply cut leaf margins turning into rich patches of creamy ivory with age. Handsome foliage topped by spires of white bracts stained raspberry pink. A centerpiece in many international conservatories and display gardens since its introduction in the early 1980s, this brilliantly variegated shrub has recently gained a new group of admirers as a centerpiece in mixed urns and container gardens due to excellent photos appearing in several major horticulturally oriented magazines. Will always demand center stage and (due to the unforgiving foliage), considerable respect.

ACHIMENES CULTIVARS for the 2008 SEASON

99077 ACHIMENES NUT ORCHID COLLECTION [5 PLANTS] Depending on the season, we will send five scaly rhizomes or five potted plants for your baskets or urns. Be warned: if we do send rhizomes, please do not call us and say that we have sent you a set of maggots in moss--these would be the odd little dormant rhizomes. When these drop all their foliage in the fall, please do not claim that they have died: they have merely gone dormant. $12.00 .

20566ACHIMENES GLORY [HYB] GES CGH $ 4.50Vigorous growing, poducing many red blushed hot pink fls with citron yellow throats. Winter dormant. Thanx: Ullman of Alum Bridge. Due to long dormancy we will not ship until new growth is apparent.

20572ACHIMENES PINK NIGHTY [HYB] GES CGH HP $ 4.75 Pointed, scallop-edged dark lvs; masses of clear luminescent bright rose pink fls over a long season. Long winter dormancy.
20008 ACHIMENES RIO RITA [HYB] GES HP TGH $ 4.75 Semi-trailing "Nut Orchid" with compact habit topped with double rose-pink scalloped flowers which remain open longer than the single cultivars. An excellent Worley hybrid with dark deep green leaves -- tends to have a much shorter dormancy cycle than the species types.

20453 ACHIMENES DOUBLE WHITE [HYB] GES CGH HP $ 6.00 Interesting ivory white double blossoms on an unidentified cultivar. Sow growing and very shy to bloom.

81484 ACORUS GRAMINEUS DWARF ARAC HH $ 4.50 Fast clustering miniature selection with taller foliage than pusillus, while individual blades are elegantly slim in the overlapping foliar fans--much used as a bonsai companion. As with all the gramineus cultivars, this must be kept evenly moist in order to maintain lustrous foliage.

30549 ACORUS GRAMINEUS DWARF HIMEMASAMUME ARAC HP HT $ 15.00 Interlacing ranks of short swpictures/ord-shaped glossy-grass lvs, each striped on its inner edge, form remarkable 4" cushions; Rarest Japanese selection of this winter hardy "Sweetflag"--also beautiful as indoor pot plant as well as a choicebonsai companion. An extremely choice minature which must be kept moist at all times.

30550 ACORUS GRAMINEUS MASAMUNE ARAC HP HT $ 3.50 Bright white-striped lvs similar to A.g. variegatus--altho considered to be more compact and shorter as matures.

30724 ACORUS GRAMINEUS MINIMUS AUREUS ARAC HP TERR $ 4.50 Marvelous small tufts of bright golden chartreuse fans of tiny flat leaf blades; wonderful in small undrained containers; very showy golden tuffet in a terrarium as well.

30551 ACORUS GRAMINEUS OBOROZUKI ARAC HP HT $ 4.50 "Golden Sweetflag" Elegant ranks of 6"+ sword lvs of bright yellow-ochre with emerald pinstripes. Striking indoors in a small blue bonsai pot; beautiful evergreen golden-grass effect when grown in a boggy spot outdoors; popular in aquatic tubs for the deck as keeps small stature. Japanese clone.

30004 ACORUS GRAMINEUS TANIMANOYUKI ARAC HP HT $ 6.00 Lime-yellow stripes inside outer edge of each slim blade; from Japan, excellent as short grassy-tufted houseplant; or quite hardy in SE Ohio--a "Japanese Sweet Flag" which stays evergreen if given semi-aquatic conditions outdoors. Easy in aquatic culture--although the name translates as "Snow on the Mountain," this is a more uncommon than showy cultivar..

Maidenhair Ferns (ADIANTUM) for the 2008 SEASON

The Maidenhair Fern Family: The delicate and beautifully foliaged fern group which do require extra humidity while growing in a well drained "sweet" medium, but which are well worth the effort to grow.

10004 ADIANTUM CAPILLUS-VENERIS POLYP HP CGH $ 4.25 Lovely "Venus Maidenhair" with short maroon stems bearing clouds of ovate-triangular pinnae; partial to lime, does well in constantly moist, cool conditions--under your greenhouse bench or in your Wardian case. Unlike the other Adiantums offered here, this species tends to need a winter rest, sending out new fronds in early spring--thus perhaps not be best choice for terrariums and windowsills unlike the others we offer, yet wonderful in the hobby greenhouse.

10008 ADIANTUM CAPILLLUS-VENERIS SCINTILLA POLYP CGH HP $ 8.75 Small-statured form with erect bold pinnae with edges that are narrowly crested and fimbriate--these closely held in plume effect as the frond is held erect by wiry purple stems. Considered a sterile clone. Perhaps the most arrestingy original and rare "Maidenhair Fern" we offer--although we are not sure most maidens would wish their hair to too closely resemble this topsy turvy outline. Perhaps a punk maiden.

10007 ADIANTUM CAUDATUM POLYP HP CGH $ 6.75 Fountains of beautiful cascading shimmering fronds; young ferns form at the tips of each mature frond, thus called the "Walking Maidenhair Fern"; from Old World tropics. Extremely dramatic when grown as a hanging basket subject in conditions of reliable humidity levels; wonderful as a carpet for your hobby greenhouse and a big favorite as it slowly populates the nooks and corners of your favorite Wardian Case.

10009 ADIANTUM HISPIDULUM POLYP CGH HP $ 5.50 "Australian Maidenhair." Forked horn-like fronds emerge red pink on top of the wiry black stems. Forms an attractive slowly increasing mound. Reliable if kept evenly moist and cool; demands quite bright light and sweet soil to thrive--when you lightly lime the other Adiantums, avoid dusting this species with lime. We stock selections of this easily grown but dainty appearing "Maidenhair" with pinkish hued new pinnae. Seems more tolerant of low humidity than other species.

11411 ADIANTUM PACIFIC MAID POLYP $ 6.50 This clone of maidenhair has broad ruffled fronds and dense habit. We often recommend this for terrariums, although it does quite well in the open if grown in dappled light. Tropical plant for growlights too.

10016 ADIANTUM RADDIANUM FRITZ LUTHII POLYP $ 6.50 Sturdy habit with a windswept aspect as fronds radiate from the central creeping rhizome. Beautiful elongated pinnae {fronds) are thickly spaced to give a shingled, layered effect always giving this a distinctive highly decorative appearance.

11651 ADIANTUM RADDIANUM PACOTTI POLYPO CGH TERR $ 8.00 A small form of the "Maidenhair Fern" with erect quite compact fronds congested with sometimes overlapping deeply lobed segments shaped like teardrops, which are often further lobed. Fertile form perfect in a wardian case.

Aechmea (Bromeliaceae) for the 2008 SEASON

These fabuously decorative, and unabashedly exotic "Urn Plants" from the West Indies and South America are epiphytic (growing upon tree branches and mossy rock surfaces) in the wild and thus flourish in perfectly drained mediums with such ingredients as coarse perlite and orchid bark (at all costs avoid sand which bogs down nearly all plants by eliminating oxygen from the root area). In nature their beautiful vase shaped leaf rosettes catch and hold rain water, so you need to keep water in their cups, considering the roots more as anchors than as gatherers of nutrients--thus fish emulsion is a better choice of fertilizer than any chemical formula. All perform well as houseplants with sufficient light and well watered (and lightly fertilized) cups/vases from which emerge the dramatic inflourences of colorful bracts and electic colored blossoms typically followed by showy persistent berries. Watch our speciality lists for additional rare variegated clones of these as well as other Bromeliad genera throughout the season. While dependable house plants, these become truely dramatic flourishes to your hobby greenhouse designs. See below for a fine collection and a good book.

99078 BROMELIAD COLLECTION: An introduction to the variety of genera & habits of these indestructible showy "Pineapple Family" characters. 5 plants @ 22.50--likely including also one or two picked from various genera not listed in this catalogue--typically drawn from Abrometiella, Acanthostachys, Aechmea, Anamea, Ananas, Billbergia, Cryptbergia, Cryptanthus, Deuterocohnia, Dyckia, Fosterella, Guzmania, Hohenbergia, Neoregelia, Nidularium, Hectia, Orthothanthus, Puya, Tillandsia, and Vriesea.

92024 BROMELIADS FOR THE CONTEMPORARY GARDEN by Andrew Steens Bromeliads include several thousand species and a bewildering number of hybrids and cultivars. Remarkable for the diversity of their striking foliage and distinctive forms, many also produce brilliant inflorescences in glowing colors. They are highly desirable, low-maintenance indoor plants, and in subtropical and tropical areas they can be grown successfully outdoors. Bromeliads for the Contemporary Garden is a book for beginners, enthusiasts, and connoisseurs alike. Descriptions and cultivation information for hundreds of species and cultivars, from Aechmea to Vriesia, along with an impressive range of photographs, will inspire gardeners and collectors. 0-88192-604-3, 198 pp, 290 color photos, 4 tables, 8 1/2 x 10 1/4", hardcover, © 2003 35.95 plus $9.50 shipping.

53221 AECHMEA CALYCULATA X RECURVATA BRO HP TGH $ 15.00 Small erect cardboard urns a rich avacado green with a blush of old rose. Very xerophytic small statured Bromeliad gradually forming a tightly packed colony of compressed urns; needs full light.

52004 AECHMEA CAUDATA ALBO-MARGINATA BRO HP TGH $ 25.00 Tall impressive urns of tough leathery leaves brilliantly margined in ivory, gradually offset to form an art nouveau fantasy. Major specimen impact in any plant array; a must for lovers of extreme variegation; a major focal point in the conservatory display.

52007 AECHMEA CHANTINII AMAZONICA BRO TGH HP $ 22.50Massive purple blushed silver urns with wide crossbands further acented by the ornately toothed edges; red flowers. We send mature offsets packed in moss of this impressive Bromeliad.

52010 AECHMEA FASCIATA ALBO-MARGINATA BRO HP TGH $ 55.00 Rather uncommon. Wurthman's prefered form of the white-banded "Silver Urn." This remarkable beauty will be shipped in moss. We have some very nice pups available at this time. Also called "Pink Feather Duster."

52015 AECHMEA FOSTER'S FAVORITE [HYB] BRO HP TGH $ 6.50 "Red Urn" Rich glossy maroon narrow urns brilliantly display fabulous heads of coral "berries" tipped with blue fls. Easy "Lacquered Wine Cup" a hybrid of A. victoriana x racinae quickly forming a colony of glossy elegantly fluted urns..

52017 AECHMEA FULGENS DISCOLOR ALBO-MARGINATA BRO HP TGH $ 22.50"Coralberry" Beautiful open urns of glaucous green leaves with faint crossbands and showy ivory margins, purpled beneath; violet purple flowers follwed by quite dramatic wide spikes of "Coralberry" fruit. Stunning rosettes of seemingly unreal laquerware, yet easy houseplants. Once not uncommon in collections, this marvelous heirloom has nearly disappeared from the trade during the last few years, replaced by more quickly grown/ produced Guzmanias for the impulse buyers at gardencenters.

52020 AECHMEA GAMOSEPALA BRO HP TGH $5.50 "Bottlebrush Bromo" Compact, rapidly-clustering urns with erect bottlebrush spikes studded with clove-shaped reddish bracts tipped with electric magenta petals. Easy house plant for the windowsill.

52273 AECHMEA GAMOSEPALA LUCKY STRIPES BRO HP TGH $ 25.00The nearly spineless outcurved erect leaves are broadly striped bright white, wonderfully overlapping to form an upright glossy urn like rosette--beautiful with the blue petaled blossoms tighly packed on a "Bottlebrush" inflorescence; certainly a must in any collection of exceptional variegates. Always sought out by Bromelliad lovers and fanciers of extreme variegation as this is an especially undemanding plant, given the drama of its appearance.

52023 AECHMEA GRACILIS BRO HP TGH $ 25.00"Popcorn Plant" Short outcurving leathery stiff rosettes present short popcorn inflorescenes of bright red bracts with red-violet flowers--and these are very very impressively colored. Excellent house or greenhouse subject; easy to bloom if given bright light. Price reflects its refusal to quickly offset like most other species.

53242 AECHMEA NUDICAULIS ALBOMARGINATA BRO TGH HP $ 12.50 Robust tubular tight urns with bright cream white margins accented by erect spines. Showy centerpiece of any plant collection or display.
52032 AECHMEA PINELIANA MINIATA BRO HP CGH $ 10.00 "Bristle Cone Plant" Copper pink hued silver urn edged in maroon teeth--compact; pinecone infl of red bracts over- whelming the small yellow fls, held aloft on stout stem. Erect urns need full sun to maintain brilliant coloration. An heirloom Bromeliad still essential in any collection for its distinctive form.

52118 AECHMEA RECURVATA HYBRID BRO HP CGH $ 5.75 A very bold upright hybrid with tight clustered fls of pink green & russett; rapidly clustering / offsetting to form a soft porcupine hemisphere. Best grown with the high light of Tillandsia culture--indeed until it blooms, quite typically mistaken for a terrestial Tillandsia. Quite popular among the topiary designers.

52272 AECHMEA RED RIBBON BRO HP TGH $8.50 Elegant 'Foster's Favorite' type upright urns of lacquered glossy ochre leaves with dramatic central red bands. Easy to grow despite its flamboyant color and habit. An excellent choice for those desiring astounding color with little fuss other than to locate this out of direct sun.

31368 AESCHYNANTHUS AFF LONGICAULIS/MARMORATA GES HP TGH $ 4.50 Excellent "Zebra Vine" form with cascading maroon stems ranked with pairs of brightly zoned succulent lvs, & with (often solitary) odd upright orange tubular blossoms. Tolerates lower levels of humidity than most Gesneriads.

20402 AESCHYNANTHUS LOBBIANUS GES HP CGH $4.25 Elliptical leaves ranked on arched, cascading stems terminating with clusters of upright flowers: each maroon cupped calyx holding a blood red "Lipstick Vine" blossom--typically blooming only once a year; this low price reflects that these are small starters.

31715 AESCHYNANTHUS LOBBIANUS FROSTY TIPS GES CGH $ 7.50 Fabulous "Frosted Lipstick Vine" with each pair of leathery leaves variegated with marginal frosty white featherings--very showy with the terminal clusters of red lipstick flowers emerging from the purple calex cups. Very bright variegation assures a dramatic plant even when not in bloom--always earns its space in any greenhouse collection.

20016 AESCHYNANTHUS MICRANTHUS VARIEGATE GES HP CGH $ 4.50 "Variegated Himalayan Lipstick Plant" The leathery glossy foliage emerges with ivory-white striations which fades with time into bright lime brushings--striking with the intense small red-purple flowers. Easily grown small statured species prefering cooler temperatures to produce the best variegation. While most Aeschynanthus produce heavy outarching stems gradually elongating until they cascade down (and thus best displayed as an older specimen in a hanging basket), this species is more delicately statured, quite at home in a tall pot on your windowsill or in your lightgarden. Always popular as is easily bloomed and tends to survive the occassional watering (underwatering?) mishap.

20486 AESCHYNANTHUS SPECIOSUS USDA CLONE GES HP TGH $ 5.50Large succulent leathery lvs ranked on stiftly arched stems terminating in showy clusters of erect large blossoms, with yellow bases shading to orange, then red at mouth with black commas at each lobe: thus earning the title of "Winter Ornament Plant"; like other Aeschynanthus (and unlike the Columnea which need to be recut annually) this dramatic easily grown Gesneriad gradually forms a magnificant specimen by gradually clumping into a vase shape of many out-arching strong stems, not needing to be re-started with new cuttings to survive.

51289 AGAPANTHUS AFRICANUS GETTY WHITE AMARYL CGH $ 10.00 Somewhat compact glaucous foliaged selection of the "Nile Lily" with heads of ivory white flowers emerging from the attractive leathery leaf fans; must reach maturity before blooming.

49427 AGAPANTHUS AFRICANUS VARIEGATED DWARF $ 22.50New introduction. This is a highly variegated and very stable new clone of the dwarf form of agapanthus africanus. It sometimes has been called Peter Pan, but we noted that this plant is a bit smaller than the one we have now and is not as robust a grower. We are quite pleased with this plant for vigor and beauty as well as blooming. The flowers are typical blue to lavender with standard size. We recommend growing it as a house plants in all cold winter areas, but it can easily be adapted to the patio during the summer. What a looker.

50117 AGAPANTHUS ELAINE [HYB] AMARY CGH HP $ 4.00 Vigorus growing patented deep blue 8" wide fl heads on thick stems above the dark green upright 2' foliage fans; typically starts heavy flowering period 3 weeks later than most when grown outdoors in the deep South--seems to bloom with the others for us in northern greenhouses. Most certainly easier to flower than any of the longer-term species.

51086 AGAPANTHUS ORIENTALIS PETER PAN AMARY CGH HP $ 3.50 "Dwarf Lily of the Nile" With 18" strap lvs; blue flower heads, more lilac-toned than most of the large species forms. Very reliable bloomer if allowed to become potbound--certainly the easiest for houseplant culture. Very popular compact form which some South African nurserymen suggest is more correctly an unusually floriferous selection of Agapanthus praecox minimus.

66853 AGERATUM HOUSTONIANUM LOHMAN'S FROST AMARY CGH HP $ 7.75 Quite a suprise: brilliantly icy frosted foliage sets off the blue "Frosted Flossflower" blossoms. Stunning yet subtle offering from Doug Lohman which will shake up any container or border--dramatic midwinter accent in the hobby greenhouse tumbling out of a small hanging basket because the white variegation becomes more intense in cooler conditions. Not easy.

Shield Plants (ALOCASIA) for the 2008 SEASON

The SHIELD LEAF PLANTS are succulently stemmed (seldom but sometimes tuberous) Aroids responding successfully to regularly moist and humid growing conditions combined with friable soil and bright (not necessarily direct) light. If accidentally chilled or dried out, fear not: just expect this to trigger any Alocasia to enter a dormant cycle--they are not dead, just resting because you have triggered their non-monsoonal mode! If you like these dramatic creatures, also investigate their kith & kin, the Xanthosomas and the bog loving Colocasias & Steudnera . . . even check their flashy shamelessly colorful Caladium cousins. Several have become important "Summertime Tropicals" for many northern gardeners in recent years, especially A. odora, A. plumbea nigra, and 'Golden Delicious,' all offered below:

99153 ALOCASIA COLLECTION (FIVE PLANTS) We can easily tailor a collection of these Alocasias for you. Let us know if you will be growing these indoors under lights, in a greenhouse, or outdoors in a bog or in a container so that we can send ones that will thrive in your growing conditions. Because of the low cost of this collection not all plants will be mature; sizes will vary, but you will get a fine grouping. Please let us know if you want these to be bog growers (in the South or in the North) or standard pot types. $44.00 .
