71663 MACFADYENA UGNIS-CATI [BIGNONIA TWEEDIANA] BIG HH $ 6.75 From Argentina, the Zone 8 "Cat's Claw Vine" clambers with neat claw tendrils under small featured clean leathery leaves. The odd cupped bright chrome yellow blossoms are 4" across. Excellent for the cool greenhouse in the north; but a fabulous showy vine in the south--develops a considerable woody tuber in time, insuring its survival in a range of potential weather mishaps.
71539 MAGNOLIA SIEBOLDII MAG HT $ 18.00 The small statured "Oyama Magnolia" prized for the fragrant white flowers accented by red stamens; considered z5 hardy. Lovely habit and tidy foliage guarentee this a spot in any small intimate garden. Very distinct species.
57496 MUSA BASJOO MUS HH CGH $ 12.75 Prefering cooler climes, this "Northern Novelty Banana" from the Ryuku Islands sends up large pale green draping tropical foliage from rootstocks needing winter protection (with mulch this is quite winter hardy in our Zone 6 gardens); odd inflorescence; white pulp fruit insipid; Japanese use this impressive10' plant for fiber. In cooler climates such as ours the head of foliage is more compact and decorative than photos of clumps grown further south where leaves are longer and thus usually tend to become somewhat more torn & shredded. Note the photo in the accompanying images taken just after the first hard freeze--still a dramatic creature, of considerable bulk after its third season! Soon after the next frost, we suggest you cut the succulent trunks off even with groundlevel and mulch with a very coarse material which will act as an umbrella and will not soak up and hold a lot of moisture over the giant roots below.
57498 MUSA [MUSAELLA] LASIOCARPUS MUS HH CGH $ 18.00 The extremely rare "Chinese Yellow Banana" pictured with snow on its gray green tropical foliage where native (but the root clump will not survive sub-terranian frost in our experience); small statured (good in pots to display the very distinctive swollen leaf bases); striking artichoke shaped infloreescence of butter yellow flowers on a separate spike arising from the ground level if this is given chill (but do not freeze the roots) winter cycles. Yunnan native of considerable architectural beauty; very easy to grow as a container subject as long as kept somewhat dry during its winter rest (best to remove dried foliage at this point), then resuming watering and fertilizing once sunlight is strong once more.
70315 NANDINA DOMESTICA WOOD'S DWARF BER HT HH $ 8.00 Reddish-coppery pinnate foliage make this very compact clone of "Dwarf Heavenly Bamboo" perfect for rockeries. Selected by Ed Wood from `Nana Purpurea.' Japanese "Nanten" translates as "Heavenly Bamboo." Holds foliage all winter here.
80968NIPPONANTHEMUM [CHRYSANTHEMUM] NIPPONICUM COMM HH CGH $ 6.75 Shrubby "Nippon Daisy" from Japan with stout stems studded with thick widely toothed spatulate leaves with a glossy jade quality; big white daisy flowers with bold greenish-yellow eyes late fall. The "Montauk Daisy" while hardy here with good drainage, blooms so late that we grow them in large low mum pots so we can bring them into shelter in the event we suffer an unusually early killing frost; also effective in containers brought into the greenhouse mid fall to prolong the marvelous display. Needs perfect drainage and light mulch to survive the outdoor winters.
80328 NYMPHAEA HYBRIDA ARC-EN-CIEL NYM HB $ 35.00 "Variegated Waterlily" Amazing selection with glossy dramatic leaves freckled white and splotched pink--often entire pink round leaves are produced in fall; the beautiful amply produced double white blossoms fade to pearl. We send heavy divisions. If you maintain a small pond or a large patio tub, this will give you the best of both flower and foliage with many lovely blossoms (not giant, but double) while always amazing with the brilliant decorative pink variegated floating foliage. A number of customers over the years have created a small pool just to accomodate this easily grown creature after seeing its stunning beauty here in the display pond.
83092 OENANTHE JAVANICA FLAMINGO UMB HT $ 4.25 Striking, yet easily grown, Korean "Water Celery" with lacy foliage variegated white & tinged violet & blushed pink: a quick colorful (but not aggressively invasive in wet conditions) low groundcover topped with lovely umbels of ivory white. Good cascader in a basket (which can NEVER dry out); very popular as a container plant in your aquatic tub on your deck or patio. Unrivaled visually to create a beautiful pink lacy groundcover in a seep or boggy area in your garden which otherwise would be overtaken by weeds.
40679 OPHIOPOGON JAPONICUS GYOKU RYU LIL HP CGH HH $ 4.25 Beautiful "Lilyturf" clumps of small very slim blades in tidy upright clumps; the "Jewel Dragon Plant" of Japan. Quite winter hardy in SE Ohio, but often with minor tip-burn. Nonetheless, in our experience, this is still the slowest to spread into a mat, as does not offset as willingly as 'Kyoto Dwarf' with its comparatively much more short and wide leafblades. Diabetes cure in China
40680 OPHIOPOGON JAPONICUS KYOTO DWARF LIL HP CGH HH $ 5.75 Marvelous tiny black-green tufts of tight leathery leaf fans--much shorter and much wider "blades" than 'Gyoku Ryu.' This is the choice for underplanting bonsai. Excellent groundcover in your Zen garden.
71232 ORIXA JAPONICA AUREA RUT HT HH $ 6.50 Very lovely woody Japanese shrub with shimmery waxy fragrant leaves emerging a rich lime gold; racemes of petite greenish blossoms. While quite attractive as a container plant, this beautiful golden copper colored shrub reaches its best potential if you wish to give a tropical look to your shrub border with this waxy leaved, exotically colored, yet easily grown curosity--and few, if any, of your plant friends will ever guess its identity.
11500 OSMUNDA REGALIS OSM HT $ 8.75 "Royal Fern" Given a moist location with protection from severe sunstroke, this will easily outlive any gardener: a long term project worth your patience as the elegant foliage arises in a more dramatic display every year.
