FRAGRANT PLANTS

Many FRAGRANT PLANTS need greenhouses to successfully bloom, even though we've included fragrant Hoyas, Pereskia, Sansevieria, Solandra, Eucharis, Myrtus, and others in other sections of this catalogue. For some very very scented (but definitely not frangrant) blossoms check Amorphophallus, Typhonium, Stapelia, and Huernia. For scented foliage we suggest Centrathermum, Salvia, Curcuma, Elletaria, Laurus, Lippa, MeNtha, Myrtus, Pelargonium, Piper, Plectranthus, Pogostemon, Aeolanthus, and so on.

11626 ADIANTUM RADDIANUM FRAGRANTISSIMUM POLYPO CGH TERR HP $ 5.50 Elegant arching blackish stems accent the dark narrow fans of this heirloom "Fragrant Maidenhair Fern"--Not quite the challenge as a houseplant that some of its fussier cousins are--and quite wonderful in any terrarium composition.

56088 BEGONIA ODORATA ALBA BEG HP CGH $ 4.75 Sprays of small white fragrant flowers; glossy ovate leaves spaced on a big boned gal of a specimen plant. Needs elbow room to flourish, but the subtle sweet scents are ample payment from this Caribbean shrub.

42196 BRUGMANSIA CANDIDA DOUBLE WHITE [PLENA] SOL CGH HP $ 12.00 Handsome double flowered "Angel's Trumpet" leaves the viewer rather breathless. Dark pelted foliage distinct. Customers report this to easily produce heavily scented blossoms more reliably than others in a greenhouse setting; branches easily; seems to respond well to the restriction of containers. This hard working hybrid of B. aurea x B. versicolor is usually offered as 'Knightii' in Europe. The only one we grow here that has been observed to bloom every month of the year.

42268 BRUGMANSIA CHARLES GRIMALDI SOL CGH TGH $ 5.50 Impressive arrays of luminous salmon-yellow trumpets dangle from the stout stems. Impressive conservatory subject. Leaves are cut Poinsettia style; trumpets typically darken to a deeper peachy orange than B. v. 'Apricot' (suaveolens x versicolor), although the distinction is minor. Visitors have told us that this seems to be the hybrid known as 'Grand Marnier' in England.

SUESS [HYB] SOL CGH $ 5.25 "Fancy Angel's trumpet" with elongated fls of yellow orange; both wider throated trumpets with stronger yellow tone than 'Charles Grimaldi' --Possibly B. suaveolens with bell shaped flowers (as opposed to the more typical trumpet shape of most hybrids); whatever its parentage, it remains the most vigorous grower in northern climates..

50503 CALLISIA FRAGRANS COMM HP TGH $ 3.50 Formerly Spironema or Tradescantia dracaenoides. Upright cupped whorls of purple-edged leaves give character of "False Bromeliad"; multiple cascading runners effective in hanging basket use. Vigorous Mexican native. Considered medicinal.

Easy culture with bright light, thus excellent for use in outdoor bedding. Newly popular in urns and windowboxes; a traditional favorite in hobby greenhouses and humid plant rooms. Woody erect stems with dramatic pairs of heavy wide lvs terminate in lovely bouquets of double white hydrangea-like white fls fading to shell pink. In North best grown as conservatory subject; winter dormant if kept cool; ours in the warm conservatory grow & bloom all winter--and the foliage is dramatically soft, the impressive clusters of flowers . . . simply breathtakingly beautiful, earning itself a place in any larger hobby greenhouse and in every conservatory.

41245 CLERODENDRON TRICHOTOMUM MARGINATUM VER CGH HH $ 12.00 "Japanese Glorybower" Wide spread shrub with decorative lvs widely margined in yellow-ochre; sprays of starry white fragrant fls in reddish calyces; followed by blue berries. This is an imperative for all collectors of variegates, even though it demands considerable and constant warmth to flourish. Not zone 5 hardy as is regular form; nonetheless a dependablely good container plant. In subtropical gardens, root hardy--and remarkably, in our test gardens outside, it seems usually root hardy even in Zone 6 with adequate winter protection..

42265 DATURA METEL CORNUCOPAEA SOL CGH SSA $ 4.00 Large purple speckled cream trumpets held semi-erect thereby revealing the three-tiered fragrant layers: "Double Purple Horn of Plenty" famous as source of Scopolamine. Sometimes listed as D. arborea 'Double Black.' We have this only on a most irregular basis--check with us to see if seedlings are available. Always creates a sensation here when it starts blooming late summer.

54561 DOMBEYA WALLICHII BYT CGH HP $ 8.50 Stout stalks with impressive foliage present the remarkably showy balls of crowded rich pink flowers emitting a rich honey fragrance. Needs light and room. Always good to observe that an old favorite is so totally back in style--especially with our many Florida and Texas collector customers.

40232 DRACAENA THALIOIDES AGAV HP TGH $ 5.75 Stiff fans of crepe mimic leaves; this Pleomele thalioides famous for surviving very low light conditions. The terminal spikes of highly scented flowers may be fragrant to some, but reminescent of airplane glue to others. Not a stunning showpiece, but a survivor with attractive leathery foliage.

53021 ELETTARIA [AMOMUM] CARDAMOMUM DWARF ZIN HP TGH $ 4.25 "Dwarf Cardamom Ginger" Small version of this spice--attractive, easily grown houseplant with wonderfully fragrant foliage quickly clumping in a windowsill pot. A tonic and expectorant, also ingested to aid digestion; belived by some to detoxify caffeine. We most emphatically do not stand by any of these claims!

66024 EPIPHYLLUM CRENATUM CAC HP TGH $ 5.75Cylindrical epiphytic stems with thick midnerve develop into thick flat waxy crenate "wings" irregularly notched and moulded. Large extravagantly fragrant blossoms, red, white, & ochre with yellow stamens; this likely is the cultivar known as `Chichicastenango,' from Guatemala. Certainly one of the most interesting species, as the art noveau designs of the wildly irregularly lobed thick flat stems are highly decorative in and of themselves. Send this to a friend who loves and needs symmetry and observe them gradually go mad. URCuttings in moss are typically sent.

40319 GARDENIA CORNUTA RUB HP CGH $ 6.00"Natal Gardenia" glossy narrow crimped leaves; fragrant spicy "Pinwheel" blossoms irregularly produced. Same odd angular boxy habit of G. thumbergii, but a different flower scent and odd orange fruit. Used for bonsai in Asia.

54115 GARDENIA [TABERNAEMONTANA] DIVARICATA [HORT] VARIEGATA APO TGH $ 25.00 Considered a selection of the "Paper Gardenia" with handsome leathery paired leaves brilliantly bordered in ivory white. While the nomenclature is poor, the shrub is stunning both in foliage and fragrant blossoms.

41817 GARDENIA JASMINOIDES (AUGUSTA) KLEIM'S HARDY RUB CGH HH $ 8.00 Cultivar of "Cape Jasmine" selected for tolerance of cooler winters than the species. Quite prolific blooming with many fragrant single flowers reaching a peak in early summer.

40320 GARDENIA JASMINOIDES [AUGUSTA] MYSTERY RUB CGH HP $ 5.25 Double white large fragrant fls; florist's favorite, thus the "Corsage Grandiflora" growing to be a stout shrub with rich glossy green quilted foliage. Asian herb for perfume oils; for also treating colds & coughs! If located in a low humidity situation the flower buds will drop before opening; in fact, any major change in location while in bud can result in the blossoms aborting so find a cool very bright spot and LEAVE it there.

If grown indoors, we suggest you place on a pebble tray to maintain constant humidity levels. A seriously beautiful plant.

20494 GLOXINIA ARION [HYB] GES HP TGH $ 6.25 Stout rosy magenta stems with G. perennis type foliage topped by wide slipper flowers flaring into a bell of rich magenta with spotted throat, somewhat fragrant. Batcheller hybrid. Dormancy cycles seem somewhat random over the years--constant warmth can nearly eliminate the cycle but may reduce the vigor of the plant.

41153 HEDERA COLCHICA SULPHUR HEART ARAL HP CGH HH $ 6.75 A cultivar of this thickly-substanced "Persian Ivy," native from the Caucasus to Iran, with beautiful yellow ochre leaf centers turning saffron during cool winters as the green borders become a chocolate purple tone; spicy aromatic foliage. Known in England as 'Paddy's Pride'. Hardy outdoors here if given a very sheltered location--but even in Z6b here lvs burn simply because of their sheer surface size.

53023 HEDYCHIUM CORONARIUM ZIN TGH HP CGH $ 12.00 "Butterfly Ginger" Fragrant white flowers top very tall stalks. The heavily perfumed ivory petals are used in Hawaiian leis, hence, also known as the "Garland Flower." Evergreen species easy to grow with good light.

53027 HEDYCHIUM [ORIENTAL] ENREI ZIN TGH CGH $ 18.00 Oriental hybrid originally received from plantsman Jack Craig outstanding with neat slim foliage topped with clusters of undulant white petals & spidery tufts on the intensely fragrant flowers. with the dark yellow centers; reaches considerable stature. The perfume can become almost overwhelming in a closed greenhouse. Swooning can occur.

60077 HOYA CARNOSA KRINKLE 8 [HORT] ASC HP TGH $ 5.00 "Waffle Hoya" Puckered deep green waxy wide leaves; beautiful showy pink blossom clusters are freely produced. Name given for the (usually) eight distinct "dimples" on each thick jade substanced decorative leaf.

60094 HOYA LACUNOSA ASC HP TGH $ 8.75 Tassel-like pendant umbels of fuzzy lemon-greenish white flowers with lemon centers and soft fragrance (a very clean aroma) perfectly match the dwarf-statured quilted leaves; the name derives form the lacunose leaf surface. That is, the surface of the leaf is cupped or depressed between the veins. Malaysian native beautifully displayed in small baskets to present the dangling scented flower clusters easily or trained on a moss topiary. Certainly the least challenging small statured cascading species to easily bloom as a houseplant.

61016 HOYA PAZIAE ASC HP TGH $ 8.00 Shruby vine habit; out arching wiry stems with small waxy paired leaves and delightfully fragrant white and lavender flowers in cute umbels. An unusually undemanding easy species preferring broken light and evenly moist well drained soil (likes a sweet, not acid soil) to form a lovely (relatively compact) houseplant. May be sent as a mossed URC

62643HYLOCERUS GUATAMALENSIS CAC TGH $ 7.75 Famous edible Guatamalan "Dragon Fruit" follows the most remarkable nocturnal intensely fragrant foot long white blossoms which emerge from the most impressively statured three winged glaucous clambering stems of this semi-epiphytic big-boned Cactus. Typically sent in dry moss--although potted ones are often mailed as well. Be warned that this is a very very big boned vine.

41102 IBOSA [TETRADENIA] RIPARIA LAB CGH HP $ 4.00 "Musk Plant" or "Misty Plume Plant" Attractive woody-stemmed shrublet with attractive small musk-scented lvs and creamy-white winter blossom panicles creating a beautiful whispy mist around Christmas time--thus its great popularity with Victorian gardeners and continued fascination for today's hobby greenhousers. Called "Nutmeg Bush" in England; used as a moth repellent in its native Africa. This is the real thing--not the "Iboza" of the trade which is usually the trailing basket plant is more accurately identified as Plectranthus madagascarensis, a cascading mint.

If you are unable to provide these very strict fall conditions, best try the following collection instead in order to achieve the fragrant blossoms.

99105 JASMINE: PLANTS CALLED JASMINE: Should you lack the cool, humid, very bright conditions demanded by the bulk of the true species but still want the intense fragrances, we can select a group collectively known (because of their type of fragrance) by the common name "Jasmine" such as specific species of Cestrum, Solanum, Pandorea, Stephanotis, certain Mandevilla, specific Gardenia, & Trachleospermum, as well as those true ones (such as the Sambac crew) reliably performing well indoors. 5 plants @ $18.00

42025 JASMINUM BEESIANUM OLE CGH HH $ 6.00 "Rose Jasmine" from Western China. Zone 7 clambering vine with pairs of sharply pointed lance lvs and dark rose pink fragrant blossoms. Must have full sunlight to perform well. Our stock plants have happily lived outdoors in an exposed coldframe for many years, blooming heavily every late spring. This vigorous vine will not from flowerbud with out a chilly fall.

Excellent foliage of deep green ruffled lvs on strong rigidly erect canes; easily produces its typically solitary flower if provided richly fertilized warm soil, bright light and even levels of humidity; avoid chill to prevent flower bud drop.

40424 JASMINUM SAMBAC MAID OF ORLEANS OLE HP TGH $ 8.00 This "Arabian Jasmine" clone has semi-double flowers of rich fragrance on woody shrubs with pale foliage; considered the best for houseculture by the Elberts--certainly the easiest to bloom indoors. The famous J.s. `Multiplex' in French perfume; traditionally the Chinese use this attractive form to give fragrance to green tea.

Needs full sun to perform; known in Asia as J. simplicifolium.

"Sweet Bay" or "Greek Laurel" Stiff decorative fragrant lvs on erect woody maroon stems make this the ideal "Formally Shaped" shrub candidate. Aromatic leaves are used to flavor food & to yield an essential oil of perfumery and medicine. The plant police will get you if you even attempt to grow a collection of topiary standards and dare to leave laurel out of the group! Will grow in indirect light as well as full sun.Being subtropical, "Sweet Bay" tolerates considerable winter chill until you can bring it out onto your summer patio; nonetheless, with proper pruning (an easy job for good cooks!) this attractive shrub will be happy on your sunny windowsill for years.

41932 LAURUS NOBILIS CRISPA [UNDULATA] LAU CGH HP $ 15.00 "Piecrust Bay Tree" Curious selection with each aromatic deep green slim leathery leaf crimped along the margin. This rare cultivar becomes an absolutely stunning topiary, whether clipped into a wide based cone, a pyramid, or cube; or, limbed up as a sturdy trunk topped with a spherical pompon.

81151 LAVANDULA DENTATA LINDA LIGON [VARIEGATED] LAB HH HT $ 6.25 A "French Lavender" whose lace cut wooly leaves are irregularly splashed with cream; purple flowers. Best kept in coldframe or cool greenhouse during winter. Demands absolutely full sun.

43148 LIPPIA [PHYLA] ALBA VER CGH $ 8.00 Small shrubby tree with dark minutely hairy leaves which, when bruised, give off a stong licorice/anise fragrance. Good container plant for sunny location, tolerating temps in the upper 40s mid winter when it produces many tiny Lantana-like heads of blossoms. This important Asian herb needs adequate humidity to avoid developing a case of red spider infeststion--so (as with "Lemon Verbena") best consideredd a sunny greenhouse plant rather than a house subject.

41727 LIPPIA DULCIS VER CGH $ 4.25 The famous "Sweet Herb" known by the Aztec as "Tzopelic Xlhuitl" who used the lvs as a sweetener--just chew the leaf before you take a bite of any fruit or raw vegetable for the sweet sensation! Forms a laterally arching mound studded with many tiny "Lantana" heads with fringes of white Lantana blossoms.
