Succulent Plants for the 2008 SEASON

SUCCULENTS, including Cacti. As most of our customers in this arena seem to live on the internet, we continue increasing descriptions, illustrations & photos on this website. Larger specimens as well as rare species & cultivars in short supply are available at the nursery which is open to the public on Fridays & Saturdays. Much excellent information on & marvelous photos of many of the following plants are available in the various excellent books on succulents we offer to you at the beginning of this catalogue. Due to a continued demand, we are now officially offering several overall introductory plant collections as well.

90230 SUCCULENT WREATH COLLECTION/ LEAFY SUCCULENTS COLLECTION: This introductory group will include easily grown members of such genera as Cyanotis, Adromischus, Rhipsalis "Mistletoe Cactus," Sedum, Kalanchoe "Mother of Thousands," Hoya "Wax Leaf Plant," Crassula, Sansevieria (especially the hahnii and "Hedgehog" types), and Senecio--all proven house & greenhouse plants; all good for incorporating into creating a living wreath, or into a dish garden, unusual hanging pot, etc. 5 plants @ PRICE: $12.00

90231 The DESERT PLANTS INDOORS COLLECTION brings you five labeled plants for PRICE: $20.00 from such genera as Agave, Aloe, Gasteria, Pachypodium, Euphorbia, Cereus, Mammilaria, and the Stapelia crew. Let us know if these are intended to become a design for a dishgarden, cascade from a hanging basket or urn, inhabit a terrarium with lizards, dazzle on your hobby greenhouse bench or charm on your windowsill or in your litegarden--we can then more accurately send you the plants most likely to thrive in such an environment.

99027 CAUDIFORM AND TROPICAL BONSAI COLLECTION: Diverse group of fat bottomed plants from a considerable range of plant families to give you a taste of the astounding range of these easily grown succulents; OR a group of succulent plants (such as Portulacaria, Ficus, Crassula portulacea cvs, Peperomia, & Euphorbia very successful as TROPICAL SUCCULENT BONSAI included with the purely caudiform species. State your interests. 10 plants @ PRICE: $48.00

You will notice an ever increasing number of individual photos & images this season--the attempt to illustrate nearly every plant we list continues--and we do thank again those of you who have sent photos we can use as so many of our older stock plants show the effect of many cuttings and airlayerings, sometimes resulting in less than typical stature for that particular species and/or cultivar. We also offer many books with great photos & discussions of the bulk of the plants we try to keep in propagation in order to support your hobby. Our "Common Names index" is now also on our website, so you can quickly locate any plant we offer if the technical Latin name eludes you. (We are the major users of this handy memory aid!) Again, please realize that if you can only bring yourself to order from an older outdated catalogue or listing, we will try to find and propagate some of the out-of-stock items if possible; however, this will obviously delay your order considerably--if you feel that constant calls to our office staff is necessary while we attempt to give your special requests special consideration by attempting to propagate them specifically for you, we will cancel your order at that point. Evidentally we've gotten old and cranky. Too many orders go out each week for us to find time to search for ongoing paperwork.

52207 ABROMETIELLA [DEUTEROCOHNIA] CHLORANTHA BRO HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.00Tidy compact carpets (in time becoming broad mounds) of multiple rosette heads of grayish green--each crowded succulent leathery leaflet tipped with a flexible spine & lined with teeth. 61082 ADROMISCHUS RUPICOLA [MACULATUS] CRA CGH PRICE: $ 7.50 Stout short stems anchor odd rosettes of "Calico Hearts" leaves which mimic fat kidney shaped pillows richly blotched dark chocolate brown; occassional red tipped flowers. Must have very dry atmosphere. Typically sent as an unrooted cutting; this results in considerably less shattering of the plump foliage.

41088 AEOLANTHUS PARVIFOLIUS LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.75 Columns of four-ranked, felted aromatic leaves completely hide the small arching stems tipped with soft pink lipped flowers. Very beautiful "Teddy Bear Mint" forms beautiful pot plant or perfect groundcover for taller leggy succulents. Comercial source of soap oils.

60213 AEONIUM ARBOREUM SCHWARTZKOPF CRA CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 "Black Tree" Wide leaves tipped purple in flat rosettes topping thick erect trunks; golden blossoms in impressive pyramidal clusters often appear midwinter. This form has very deep maroon "Black Tree" leaves with shiny flat leaved rosettes reaching their most beatiful level mid winter--tends to rest in the heat of mid summer as its Canary Islands origins dictate. Very popular currently for combining with other "black" plants in contained avant gardening.

60222 AEONIUM GLUTINOSUM BALLERINA CRA CGH HP PRICE: $8.25 Hummel's now heirloom quality clone with congested upright whorls of felted sticky leaves edged in white frosted bands. Bizzare attractive self branching form of this easy evergreen hemispherically shaped species from Madeira.

Usually marketed in the language of terminal cute as "Kiwi Krassula" in California.

60225 AEONIUM LINDLEYII [HORT] CRA CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 "Euphorb Antidote" The California clone (we have the old Hummel bloodline) with sticky felted rosettes on wiry stems always appearing to be a species from Mars--juice from the watery succulent leaf reputed to counteract the toxic sap of Euphorbiaceae. May be sent as an URCUT in dry moss.

60725 AEONIUM SUNBURST VARIEGATED CREST CRA HP CGH PRICE: $ 8.00Gray green leaves margined white--the whole squeezing out of terminally fasciating stems. We can try to send you a cockscomb cutting if you wish--this clone seems to morph in and out of its crested mode during the many years we have grown it. The purity of the excellent variegation, nonetheless, never varies. Unusual--keep barely moist during dormancy cycle during mid-summer when it holds its foliage, but resists any major growth spurts. During the winter growth period be sure to provide adequate moisture and full sun.

This is an excellent indoor plant. Smooth leaves are not as hard or stiff as its desert brethern, thus easier to trundle out of your plantroom or greenhouse for a summer of showing off on your patio or deck, without serious damage imflicted upon the human trundlers. We thank Ruud Cuhfus for helping determine the more currently correct name for this excellent houseplant.

68340 AGAVE VICTORIA-REGINAE AGA HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.00 Highly decorative hemispherical rosette of stiff blunt black green leaves with silvery-white margins. Mexican species requiring less intense light than most species, thus a natural for the sunny windowsill.

Low compact highly colored rosettes soon form an interwoven hemisphere of ornate soft leaves--not requiring as intense light levels as many succulents. And we swear on a stack of TROPICAs that we are in no way responsible for this name.

65012 ALOE BELLATULA LIL CGH PRICE: $ 8.75 "Coral Wands Aloe" Clumping short stems clasped by white-dotted, upright grassy leaves (the mottled slim leaves are soft and pliable), and topped by stalks of coral red flowers mid-winter. 65045 ALOE MACULATA [SAPONARIA] LIL HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.00 "Christmas Candles" From wide fleshy rosette arise spikes with large coral-red tubular flowers mid-winter. Handsome. Called "Soap Aloe" to indicate a practical use of the richly sappy succulent leaves.

65044 ALOE MACULATA [SAPONARIA] VARIEGATA LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 12.00 Wide fleshy speckled leaves with bright gold bands form thick rosettes; occasional flowers are toned red through yellow. Some consider this a hybrid of A. striata x picta.

65051 ALOE VERA [BARBADENSIS] LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 "Burn Aloe" Large fleshy glaucous leaves, spots fading with age; eventual yellow flowers. Nomenclature controversial; origin probably Canary Islands and Barbary Coast, but mentioned even in very ancient Chinese texts on medicine. As this is not the gray surfaced form found in the Canaries, this is considered to have undergone many re-sellections over the centuries and is occassionally designated as the form 'Chinensis.'

65054 ALOE WALMSLEY'S BLUE [HYB] LIL HP TGH PRICE: $4.00"Blue Clusters" Chalky blue-green leaves tightly packed on stubby stems completely hidden by clustering suckers of beautifully colored foliage. Easy.

The silver of the dark striated thick leaf centers are quite ornately dotted platinum, each thich gray green leaf also mottled beneath--indicative of its Aloe parent; the whorled hard surfaced upreaching habit suggests the other Astroloba blood. Very beautiful unique addition to your rare Gasteria or Haworthia collection.

60512 ANACAMPSEROS RUFESCENS [ARACHNOIDES] POR HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 "Good Luck Plant" Mat of spiral rosettes of purplish-brown fat-angled leaves with white cobwebbing in the axils, over odd thickened bulb-like root; beautiful magenta-pink flowers if given full sun.

65573 ANTHERICUM FRUTICOSUM LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Easily grown caudiform: from swollen surface roots arises a thick succulent trunk topped with a crown of fat strap leaves (not unlike a Dracaena experiencing a bad hair day); finally ending with slim spikes of white starflowers. 66002 APOROCACTUS FLAGELLIFORMIS CAC HP TGH PRICE: $4.25"Rat Tail Cactus" Narrow long pendant closely-ribbed stems intricately covered with small reddish spines; soft rose flowers quickly fade to rich magenta. Fabulous basket subject we still offer even though the entire packing staff would love to see this spiny critter exit the catalogue! Usually sent as generous URCuttings in dry moss. Best grown as you would an "Orchid Cactus" (Epiphyllum) with either bark or punice stone in the mix to insure proper drainage.

68472 APTENIA CORDIFOLIA MAJOR VARIEGATA AIZ TGH HP PRICE: $ 7.00 Succulent chrystaline embedded large leaf pairs strinkingly margined ivory on fleshy cascading stems with showy clusters of rich maroon red flowers; "The Giant Sun Rose" needs full light, adequate light, and constant warmth to reach its full potential.

60195 APTENIA LANCIFOLIA PRICE: $ 4.75 Succulent "Ice Plant" mat with many rose red rayed blossoms. Famous as "Hearts & Flowers" always popular in summer outdoor plantings of tubs, urns, and windowboxes.

60969 APTENIA SPECIES WHITE FLOWER AIZ TGH HP PRICE: $ 2.75 Curious deeply and dramatically cascading vine with white starry blossoms produced with great abandon. May be a Delosperma species--still in debate. Newly found by hobbyist for outdoor summer urns and windowboxes for a rapidly cascading accent in any grouping--as long as it is warm and sunny, will tolerate considerable moisture.

65184 ASTROLOBA SPIRALIS HORTICULUTRAL FORM LIL HP TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Overlapping leaves in spiraling rows; leaves taper to a sharp point, with oblique keel beneath. This form seems to have slimmer, longer leaves than the type.
