Succulent Plants for the 2013 SEASON

SUCCULENTS, including Cacti. As most of our customers in this arena seem to live on the internet, we continue increasing descriptions, illustrations & photos on this website. Larger specimens as well as rare species & cultivars in short supply are available at the nursery which is open to the public on Fridays & Saturdays. Much excellent information on & marvelous photos of many of the following plants are available in the various excellent books on succulents we offer to you at the beginning of this catalogue. Due to a continued demand, we continue several overall introductory plant collections as well--not only an extremely inexpensive way for you to investigate a new family or category of succulents, but an increasingly popular choice to send as a gift package to a plant friend.

90230 SUCCULENT WREATH COLLECTION/ LEAFY SUCCULENTS COLLECTION: This introductory group will include easily grown members of such genera as Cyanotis, Adromischus, Rhipsalis "Mistletoe Cactus," Sedum, Kalanchoe "Mother of Thousands," Hoya "Wax Leaf Plant," Crassula, Sansevieria (especially the hahnii and "Hedgehog" types), and Senecio--all proven house & greenhouse plants; all good for incorporating into creating a living wreath, or into a dish garden, unusual hanging pot, etc. 5 plants @ PRICE: $12.00. This is increasingly popular due to so many magazine and television articles on creating a living wreath (no longer just a Christmas seasonal item) for ones own home, but also as a project to create and grow on a living gift for friends and relatives as well. Homemade cookies and homemade wreaths are equally kool of late!

90231 The DESERT PLANTS INDOORS COLLECTION brings you five labeled plants for PRICE: $20.00 from such genera as Agave, Aloe, Gasteria, Pachypodium, Euphorbia, Cereus, Mammilaria, and the Stapelia crew. Let us know if these are intended to become a design for a dishgarden, cascade from a hanging basket or urn, inhabit a terrarium with lizards as companions, dazzle and wow on your hobby greenhouse bench or charm on your windowsill or in your litegarden--we can then more accurately send you the plants most likely to thrive in such an exacting environment.

99027 CAUDIFORM AND TROPICAL BONSAI COLLECTION: Diverse group of fat bottomed plants from a considerable range of plant families to give you a taste of the astounding range of these easily grown succulents; OR a group of succulent plants (such as Portulacaria, Ficus, Crassula portulacea cvs, Peperomia, Semecio, & Euphorbia very successful as TROPICAL SUCCULENT BONSAI included with the purely caudiform species. State your interests. 10 plants @ PRICE: $48.00

You will notice an ever increasing number of individual photos & images--the attempt to illustrate nearly every plant we list continues--and we do thank again those of you who have sent photos we can use as so many of our older stock plants show the effect of many cuttings and airlayerings, sometimes resulting in less than typical stature for that particular species and/or cultivar. We also offer many books with great photos & discussions of the bulk of the plants we try to keep in propagation in order to support your hobby. Our "Common Names index" is now also on our website, so you can quickly locate any plant we offer if the technical Latin name eludes you. (We are the major users of this handy memory aid!) Again, please realize that if you can only bring yourself to order from an older outdated catalogue or listing, we will try to find and propagate some of the out-of-stock items if possible; however, this will obviously delay your order considerably--if you feel that constant calls to our office staff is necessary while we attempt to give your special requests special consideration by attempting to propagate them specifically for you, we will cancel your order at that point. Evidentally we've gotten old and cranky. Too many orders go out each week for us to find time to search for ongoing paperwork.

60213 AEONIUM ARBOREUM SCHWARTZKOPF CRA CGH PRICE: $ 7.50 "Black Tree" Wide leaves tipped purple in flat rosettes topping thick erect trunks; golden blossoms in impressive pyramidal clusters often appear midwinter. This form has very deep maroon "Black Tree" leaves with shiny flat leaved rosettes reaching their most beatiful level mid winter--tends to rest in the heat of mid summer as its Canary Islands origins dictate, the tight rosettes of leaves incurving into guppy mouths, at which point you need to cut back severely on watering to avoid root rot. Very popular currently for combining with other "black" plants in containerized avant gardening.

60737 AEONIUM DOMESTICUM CRA CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.50 Standard Canary Island Aeonium. Sometimes called A. decorum or Aeonium Arboreum. This is an easy grower with a flush of rose blossom minic foliage all winter, then a summer rest.

60726 AEONIUM KIWI-ONIUM [HYB] CRA CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.50 Slim wiry stalks topped with congestions of wide cillate leaves with their variegated broadened tips suggesting fashion conscious nails painted lime cream--this variegation trailing on up the margin of each of the waxy dainty leaves. The beautiful colorations seems always to be especially much more bright in the cooler winter months when new growth flourishes. Characteristically stops growing during exceptional summer heat--so be careful of overwatering during that season. Usually ( in the category of "This Is The End of Culture As We Know It") this Aeonium cultivar is marketed in the language of terminal cute as "Kiwi Krassula" in California.

60725 AEONIUM SUNBURST VARIEGATED CREST CRA HP CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Gray green leaves margined bright white--the whole squeezing out of terminally fasciating stems, wonderful succulent cockscombs. This clone seems to morph in and out of its crested mode during the many years we have grown it. The purity of the excellent variegation, nonetheless, never varies. Unusual--keep barely moist during dormancy cycle during mid-summer when it holds its foliage, but resists any major growth spurts. During the winter growth period be sure to provide adequate moisture and full sun.

Agave victoria-reginaeAptenia cordifolia variegataAeonium lindleyiiAeonium arboreum atropurpureumAloe vera Medicine AloeAgave americana mediopicta alba

68005 AGAVE AMERICANA CORNELIUS BAJA AGA TGH PRICE: $ 25.00 Limited. Please Inquire. Wonderful and rare variegated and somewhat monstrose Agave. This was originally introduced and sold at his nursery in California by Ed Hummel in the 1960s. It has always been considered a rare and unusual plant as the heavily armed leaves are far more truncate and wavy than species forms. This is a meristemmed version sometimes offered under the clonal name of A. Cornelius. We indirectly introduced this through our mail order catalogue as offsets of stock plants which originally came to us from Hummel's Nursery as Agave americana Cornelius Baja Monstrosa. .

68004 AGAVE AMERICANA AUREO-MARGINTA AGA TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 "Gold-banded Century Plant" Glaucous gray-green lvs sharply bend downward above the middle, edges with hooked teeth & a terminal spine; becomes a yellow-edged handsome rosette.

68006 AGAVE AMERICANA MEDIO-PICTA AGA HP CGH PRICE: $ 45.00 Very dramatic gold central stripes on each potentially massive leaf; does not flower without nearly free root-run. American Indians use this in native medicine as an antiinflamatory This plant is not always available. It is actually harder to find in the nursery trade currently than the compact variegated white form as the somewhat brittle thick succulent leaves are seriously armed with marginal teeth/spines and the arching leaves achieve an impressive length, thus presenting quite a challenge to our expert packing staff: the price here has more to do with the struggles and potential human bloodletting when packaging than any other factor. Please inquire--for indeed in certain phases of the moon we experience that rare harmonic combination of established offsets and a set of willing packers to coincide.

68007 AGAVE AMERICANA MEDIO-PICTA ALBA AGA HP TGH PRICE: $ 30.00 "Ivory-striped Century Plant" Brilliant white wide central band on each short curved deep green leaf--this forms a remarkable specimen noted for performing well as a houseplant. Unique and most certainly the most popular and coveted of the variegated Agave cultivars.

68008 AGAVE AMERICANA STRIATA AGA HP CGH PRICE: $ 25.00 Blue-blushed leaves liberally streaked cream and gold; forms a wide, low glaucous rosette--very outstanding specimen. Always a rarity as does not necessarilly pup true.

68009 AGAVE ANGUSTIFOLIA MARGINATA AGA HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Banded Caribbean Agave" Stiff bayonette leaves of bluish-gray liberally margined in creamy white and lined with attractive brown spines; rugged decorative houseplant fast growing with adequate light and moisture. A great plant for the house; a stunning performer on the summer patio. Easily grown as is native to an area without extreme rain and drought cycles!

68012 AGAVE ATTENUATA VARIEGATA RAEA'S GOLD AGA TGH PRICE: $ 25.00 Wonderful and rare subtlely variegated gold spineless Agave. This was originally introduced by Ed Hummel in the 1960s as A. attenuata 'Kara.' These plants are mutations from 'Kara' that are bright gold. It has always been considered a rare and unusual plant which in that time period sometimes drew prices of upwards of a thousand dollars because the species attenuata tends to be single trunked without producing any offsets. Many very distinctive plants came from Hummel's Nursery in the 1960s.

68584 AGAVE CUPREATA MEXICO AGA TGH PRICE: $ 12.00 A collection from Morelia, Michocan Mexico, an area usually considered Z9 with unusually attractive glossy rosettes, with each wide succulent leaf strongly bud imprinted and armed with copper-colored teeth. One of the hardier Agave species. Perhaps worthy of trying in a rock garden. Our current stock is extremely limited.

94008 AGAVE DRAGON'S TOES AGA TGH PRICE: $ 12.00 A most charming Agave cultivar (or perhaps a hybrid?)--an evaluation seldom given to any of this typically forbidding genus. Tightly set glaucous blue fat leaves in a beautiful hemisphere with eventual offsets peeking out from beneath the compact skirts--great for pots indoors, or outside in warmer temperartures.

68035 AGAVE DESMETTIANA (WEBERII) AUREO-MARGINATA / VARIEGATA AGA HP TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 This elegantly poised beauty currently goes under either of these two names. Elegantly recurved spineless leaves margined in bright cream. This is an excellent indoor plant with smooth leaves are not as hard or stiff as its desert brethern, thus easier to trundle out of your plantroom or greenhouse for a summer of showing off on your patio or deck, without serious damage imflicted upon the human trundlers. This is the perfect candidate for that semi-formal urn to accent a structured garden design. We thank Ruud Cuhfus for helping determine the more currently correct name for this excellent houseplant.

68580 AGAVE GEMMINIFLORA AGA CGH PRICE: $ 12.50 "Pet Me Porcupine" Very attractive soft leaved Mexican which forms short rushlike leaved spheres perfect in containers. The sculptural foliage holds up well in lower light conditions than those of most Agave kin. The only cute Agave of which we are aware which does not bite back when petted--remarkable, considering its marvelously daunting original name, Bonapartea flagelliformis.

68053 AGAVE JAPAN #1 AGA HP TGH PRICE: $18.00 "Paper Tooth Agave" This becomes a very special compact specimen of intense presence. Spines are papery on the dramatic very thickly substanced short stout leaves jutting out in their numbers to form into a dusky toned spherical outline; perhaps a large form of the Japanese `Kissyokan' or a juvenile form of titanota, From time to time demand outstrips availability--so please INQUIRE before ordering.

68310 AGAVE KICHIJOKAN [HYB] AGA HP TGH PRICE: $ 12.50 Very dwarf gray-leaved Japanese clone forming tight stacks of pseudo-spined succulent foliage. A basic in dish garden groupings.

56939 AGAVE KISSO KAN AGA TGH PRICE: $ 22.50 Wonderful and rare variegated "Happy Crown" Agave always sought after by serious collectors interested in the compact highly variegated Japanese clones. Very beautiful--and compact enough to use in dish garden designs.

68475 AGAVE LOPHANTHE QUADRICOLOR AGA HP TGH PRICE: $12.50 Extremely showy variegation with no two showy armed leaves striped in the same precise pattern. Waxy Central American (thus, intolerant of extended chill, but tolerant of watering year round) collector's favorite with striking stripes and ornately toothed margins forming thick compact mounded outlines which as it becomes mature, often develops a cute litter of offsets dangerously peeping out from under mother's armed skirt. Perhaps the most interesting and uniquely colorful of all of the variegated forms of Agave--and most assuredly one of the easiest to cultivate.

68017 AGAVE NIZADENSIS [STRIATA HORT] AGA HP TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 "Octopus Agave" Coppery-green outfacing, spreading leaves with decorative amber mid-ribs and tiny whitish teeth. Oaxaca native. Beware: the outthrust slim but thick succulent leaves are easily broken and thus a serious challenge to our expert packing crew. Sometimes offered in Florida as 'striata'--which is actually a completely different species. We offer the correct species which, being slow to offset, may have availability issues if overordered, so best to INQUIRE before ordering.

68581 AGAVE PARRYI CREAM SPIKE AGA TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Wonderful and rare Agave. This spectacular agave displays blue-green leaves surrounded by a dramatic smooth creamy-white margin. The thick leaves comprising the 12 inch clump feature maroon-black leaf tips and haarmless teeth along the margins when quite mature. Leaf impressions from the reverse side of unfurling leaves reminiscent of fossils are evident on fully expanded leaves. For full sun in well-drained soils in non freezing climes, or fantastic as a potted specimen.

68321 AGAVE PARRYII SUPERHARDY AGA TGH PRICE: $ 14.50 A seedlings from a plant collected near Flagstaff, Arizona. Silver grey foliage. The leaves are narrower than the typical A. parryii form. We retain the clone designation with which we received this beauty: so still "Super Hardy," but we do not know how far North this will be hardy as can easily survive cold dry winter conditions, but not cool wet conditions. Definitely an odd plant, very slow growing, and only surviving in full sun. The pictures are of two year old plants. Limited numbers available.

68582 AGAVE PATONII STOREY CLONE AGA HP CGH $ 35.00 Distinctive grey leaves, broad and short with rich golden cream margins. Great compact plant for growing under lights or in dish garden arrangements. Always commented on here in our display gardens.

68316 AGAVE SCHIDIGERA SHIRA ITO NO OHI GA HP TGH PRICE: $ 27.50 Wonderful and rare "Queen of the White Thread" developing a similar form and symmetry to the dramatic beauty of 'Shira ito no Ohi' to capture one's attention. Each thick, dark-green leaf is margined by a crisp white border, highlighted by silver interior markings and edged with white curly filifers. Eventually forms a 12 inch clump suitable for pot use, or as a garden plant in zones 8 and south--but be aware that this clone will not tolerate wet soil when chilled. Sometimes in short supply, so best to INQUIRE before ordering.

68036 AGAVE SISSILINA VARIEGATA / STRIATA [HORT] AGA HP TGH PRICE: $ 35.00 Spineless long sword leaves in wide arched rosettes; each succulent leaf brightly centered yellow--this wide band is usually striated with gray pin stripes. Must have heat; thus an excellent choice for a sunroom or conservatory. Tends to rot if abandonded to a prolonged chill. For those collectors who thought they had already found all the variegated Agave cultivars, only to discover this one!

68370 AGAVE TITANOTA [HORT] AGA HP TGH PRICE: $ 20.00 Truncate stature--thick fleshy short leaves with papery incurved "teeth" dramatic on the serrated edges of the glaucous blushed metal green alabastar flesh. Best give full sun and moving air to prevent rot.

68340 AGAVE VICTORIA-REGINAE AGA HP CGH PRICE: $ 8.50 Highly decorative hemispherical rosette of stiff blunt black green leaves with silvery-white margins. Mexican species requiring less intense light than most species, thus a natural for the sunny windowsill.

68033 AGAVE VICTORIA-REGINAE ORNATA AGA HP TGH PRICE: $ 12.50 "Miniature Agave" Very attractive dwarf with tiny papery white & tan edges; forms clump of rosettes eventually forming a fabulous jewel like hemisphere. Tolerates lower light than most of this genus.

68031 AGAVE VICTORIA-REGINAE AUREO-MARGINATA AGA HP TGH $ 27.50 Once again available in limited numbers; must have perfect drainate and high light concentrations. Compact prism leaves margined in yellow--a rare characteristically rather small statured clone.

68319 AGAVE VILLMORIANA SELECTION AGA CGH PRICE: $ 8.50 Seldom seen "Blue Mexican Agave" with flat profiled rosette of smooth flat overlapping leaves a pearly blue grey in good light growing conditions, each with a slightly horny tip. These uniquely prostrate rosettes derive from a crested parent--so some may fasciate in time.

68345 AGAVE VILMORINIANA MONSTROSA AGA CGH PRICE: $ 60.00 Pearly gray swirled glaucous lvs thickly overlapping on the wide undulating crested trunk of this fabulous sci-fi monster. Easily grown into an impressive showwinner. From Hiroshi in Japan.

65001 ALBUCA CRINIFOLIA LIL HP CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 Elegant strap leaves from glossy exposed surface spherical bulb from which arise wands of white lily flowers with red median stripes; from South Africa. At least two thirds of the bulb's volume needs to be above ground/soil level. Appearance of an Ornithogalum caudatum on serious steroids (but we have not noticed any side effect of aggressive behavior)!
