The Maidenhair Fern Family: The delicate and beautifully foliaged fern group which do require extra humidity while growing in a well drained "sweet" medium, but which are well worth the effort to grow.

10004 ADIANTUM CAPILLUS-VENERIS POLYP HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Lovely "Venus Maidenhair" with short maroon stems bearing clouds of ovate-triangular pinnae; partial to lime, does well in constantly moist, cool conditions--under your greenhouse bench or in your Wardian case. Unlike the other Adiantums offered here, this species tends to need a winter rest, sending out new fronds in early spring--thus perhaps not be best choice for terrariums and windowsills unlike the others we offer, yet wonderful in the hobby greenhouse.

10008 ADIANTUM CAPILLLUS-VENERIS SCINTILLA POLYP CGH HP PRICE: $ 8.75 Small-statured form with erect bold pinnae with edges that are narrowly crested and fimbriate--these closely held in plume effect as the frond is held erect by wiry purple stems. Considered a sterile clone. Perhaps the most arrestingy original and rare "Maidenhair Fern" we offer--although we are not sure most maidens would wish their hair to too closely resemble this topsy turvy outline. Perhaps a punk maiden.

Although we recommend greenhouse culture in our climate, some customers have successfully grown this as a house or large Wardian Case specimen, always keeping constant levels of humidity. We have grown this to a most impressive size on a sunny porch, glass enclosed during the winter.

10047 ASPLENIUM BULBIFERUM FLORALEE POL HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 We have renewed supply of this wonderful fern. It is a faster and more robust clone called "Floralee." It looks like the species we have always offered but grows much better. We got this clone from Santa Rosa Tropicals. We are happy with it. Long waxed lacy fronds with baby ferns growing on the leaf surface of the arching fronds. Easy (but slow) and choice. Cool spots tolerated.

Very attractive small fern equally successful as a windowsill pot plant (looks great in a small bonsai pot as the wiry maroonish rhizomes wander over the lip) and as a small statured vertical accent in the sophisticated terrarium. Delicate appearance, yet easy to grow.

11431 COLYSIS WRIGHTII MONSTRIFERA POLYP CGH TERR PRICE: $ 9.25 Short glossy membraneous fronds, elaborately veined, widely fluted into undulant tips like an Art Nouveau fantasy. This tassled rare dwarf is petite enough to be perfect in a terrarium, yet quite able to cope with humidity levels of the windowsill or litegarden. Always one of the most popular dwarf ferns we offer--it looks difficult to grow, but is not. Certainly the most Lalique of any plants.

Sharply outlined holly shaped pinnae are closely layered on the short curved fronds' distinctive verdant green dull sheen also distinguishes this beautiful species native from Sri Lanka to Japan. Good container plant. Certainly a subtropical garden worthy fern in the South as will tolerate considerable chill.

10242 CYRTOMIUM FALCATUM ROCHEFORDIANUM POLYP CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.00 Long-lived Asian "Holly Fern" with dark leathery fronds with pinnae strongly frringed and toothed. Very reliable container subject as long as kept evenly moist. Not reliably winter hardy here if weather is severe for an extended period, yet considered and declared to be zone 6 hardy in many reference books. Our clone has not, evidentally, read or consulted any of these expert books.

10317 DAVALLIA PYXIDATA POLYP TGH PRICE: $ 42.00 "Australian Davallia." Reddish rhizomes grow upward into the air, branching from their bases (very bizarre); flattened spray of many tiny leathery pinnae--a very dark and waxy plane of intricate foliage unique to this footed fern. A collector's favorite for the unique habit--eventualy a major specimen requiring considerable space. Prefers orchid mix. Sometimes the demand for this is significant: but we now maintain two large stock plants and should be able to send good divisions throughout the season.

11620 DICKSONIA ANTARTICA DIC CGH $10.00 The majestic "Tasmanian Treefern" needs cool (subtropic) very humid conditions to form its canopy of impressive outreaching deep green heavily textured fronds, with their network of straw toned veins, crowning the fibrous, wooly trunk. Avoid excessive heat during the winter.

10484 HUMATA TYERMANII POLYP HP PRICE: $ 4.25 "White Rabbit Foot." The arched, vigorous foot is pure white and very furry. The fronds are lacy and deep, rich green. Excellent as a pot plant, outstanding in a hanging basket for a houseplant.

11430 LEPISORUS BICOLOR POLYPO CGH PRICE: $ 7.25 Resembles a sophisticated Pyrrosia with very slim surface rhizomes; strap fronds with indented polka-dot spore patches distinguish this "Sechuan Ribbon Fern" which Eco-Gardens considers Zone 8 hardy. Quite beautiful and distinct in pot or basket--even though its initial slow deliberate growth rate may test your patience. Grown in Camellia house conditions this creeping fern becomes fantastic, whether as a ground cover, as a hanging moss basket subject, a moss topiary addition, or as a gradually shingling climber on a moist protected wall.

Excellent, more compact version of the above also good for hanging baskets but also good for larger wardian cases and growlight setups. Excellent "Dwarf Terrestial Elkhorn" with stout bright green simple fronds arching upward from the surface rhizome to flaunt its spreading much branched tip crests--one of the easiest ferns for the house as well as one of the showiest.

10664 MICROSORIUM PUNCTATUM SERRATUM [LACINIATUM] POLYP TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 "Saw Tooth Kelp Fern" formerly M. intergifolium serrulatum. From strong woody surface root stalks arise dramatic ranks of tall membraneous erect strap fronds with their entire undulating glossed margins heavily toothed--a good first candidate to try to grow in this category of dramatic footed ferns with elaborate erect solid (no pinnae) fronds as 'Serratum' is always a vigorous grower far more tolerant of low humidity than its brethern and astounding visually if planted in the center of a hanging basket or urn to add a vertical art noveau touch to otherwise cascading plants--especially when combined with other ferns with a lower statured habit.

11406 MICROSORIUM STEERI POLYPOD TGH TERR PRICE: $ 22.00 "Oil Slick Fern" Surface rhizome disappears under the short lance strap fronds of curved leathery substance with a surface of blue metalic sheen. A collectors's must even though others may deem it the sutff of surreal nightmares.

Nephrolepis species, the Boston Ferns, for the 2009 SEASON

The Boston Fern is always popular and comes in many variations. We offer some of the most distinctive variations below.

14002 NEPHROLEPIS BISSERATA FURCANS POLYPO CGH HP $ 6.75 "Fishtail Fern" Large; frond tips fork into sections; this is a very large statured robust fern demanding a considerable space when mature--as tolerates full sun, now also a popular deck subject--but will take some time to achieve. Jones classifies as N. falcata forma furcans. Slow to start, but strong to finish--never allow this to chill! For windowsill pots and mixed combination plantings we recommend the following tidier (and less agressive) dwarf selection:

14009 NEPHROLEPIS CORDIFOLIA BUTTONS [GARRETTII] POLYP HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 "Tatting ribbon Fern" Small erect, then somewhat arched fronds with all pinnae reduced to rounded buttons along the rachis--larger statured than N.C. 'Duffii' with appearance of Pellaea rotundifolia. Also called 'Patty Roosevelt' even though, like all the cordifolia cultivars, this forms weird subsurface tubercules resembling sci-fi cocoons and thus is not an exaltata cultivar at all!

14004 NEPHROLEPIS CORDIFOLIA FLORAL FANTASY POLYP HP CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Floral Fantasy Fern" Upright rachis sports monstrose and undulate pinnae. Rather tolerant of dry conditions, thus a handsome house plant for a vertical effect. Must have full sun to flourish and maintain its leathery rigidness--an thus not a successful house plant for most people. Very slow growing selection.

11649 NEPHROLEPIS CORDIFOLIA HANDY POLYP HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.75 Very dark green mounding "Dwarf Petticoat Fern" with fronds closely ranked with glossy crinkly pinnae; when a frond reaches 6" to 8" it starts to crest by forking and reforking at the tips. Give this little forker good light and keep evenly moist. Excellent houseplant; fabulous conservatory showoff. For a long fronded "Turkey Tail" version, please note the N. Cordifolia 'Tesselata' offered above.

14026 NEPHROLEPIS CORDIFOLIA KINKY POLYP HP TGH PRICE: $ 22.00 Rigorously erect dwarf fronds barely unfurl their deep emerald dusky-bearded leaflets. Much smaller, more compact than similarly leathery-fronded 'Floral Fantasy'--but also very slow growing and intolerant of shade and thus recommended for the advanced fern collector.

14010 NEPHROLEPIS CORDIFOLIA TESSELATA POLYP HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.00 "Petticoat Sword Fern" The tips of each dark green strong frond are tasseled and re-tasseled to form remarkable heavy cockscombs; easy houseplant as can survive watering lapses due to reserves in the tubercles underground. Plant must mature considerably before it has the strength to start sending out mature forked fronds.

11632 NEPHROLEPIS ECUADORIAN SWORD POLYPODIA HP TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Handsome "Ebony Sword Fern" with crisped pleated pinnae on dark rigidly held fronds; erect habit. For us, very slow to establish. Quite distinctive vertical statement, starting out a pale green but (with good fish emulsion) eventually turns a blackish green hue. OFTEN IN LIMITED STOCK

Very tight growing and upright in habit. Sometimes labelled "Emerald Vase" or even "Floral Fantasy."

11653 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA POM PON POLYP HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.50 'Pom Pon' could easily be called "The Cheerleaders' Fern"--but of course we will not stoop to such sorry humor! This is such a well behaved small statured Nephrolepis noted for each pinnae being quite rounded in outline that both growers and the public take to it instantly. The color is very consistenly a bright green and seems quite pest resistant. It forms a very tight and rounded and full ball in a haning basket.

11661 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA RITA'S GOLD POLYP HP PRICE: $ 12.00 "Rita's Golden Boston Fern" The heavy fronds are solid golden yellow; makes a striking hanging basket subject. This plant is a new aquisition in 2008. It looks in many ways like the "Nephrolepis exaltata aurea." I would not order both. This seems to have more vigor and be a brighter gold. Check this out!!

11554 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA SASSY POLYP HP PRICE: $ 9.25 "Table" fern or small hanging basket...quick, reliable, wonderfully improved cross between Compacta and Teddy Jr. This fern really fits its name, "Sassy". "Sassy" just looks fresh and sassy! Easy to grow, all plants in a block exhibit the same growth rate and uniform looks. Could work well in an assortment. Light green color really stands out. New introduction from Santa Rosa. We have offered their Suzi Wong for years; and people just love it too. This plant is a bit better for general use anywhere in the house.

11586 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA SUZI WONG POLYPOD GH PRICE: $ 7.50 Dwarf lacy selection--unlike most extremely delicate types, if adaquate moving air is available, the fronds do not discolor & brown easily, even though layer after layer of froth develops on each frond. Avoid excessive humidity; best with good air movement--thus even though it has the perfect appearance for your Wardian case, Suzi may not be the best choice for her lower skirts may get a bit messy if the humidity level is extreme that is, if your case is kept quite humid.!

14034 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA TRI-TIKI POLYP HP TGH PRICE: $ 12.00 Deep green recurved pinnae criss-cross; very packed fronds with geometric riffs & valleys: combines the most levels w/ the most congested fronds of any cultivar we know and thus needs high humidity with excellent air movement to prevent rot and algae buildup in the interior of these thick fronds. The choice of compulsive collectors who need to grow the absolutely most completely over-the-top hyper ruffled "Boston Fern."

11405 NEPHROLEPIS EXALTATA VARIEGATA [PPAF] TGH POLYP PRICE: $ 18.00 The true "Variegated Boston Fern" with long dramatic fronds, with the individual pinnae green, gold, or typically striped green and gold--remarkably beautiful, certainly rare. From Exotic Foliage Nursery, [PPAF?]--this "Tiger" requires very bright indirect light and adequate air movement to best display its completely remarkable strong substanced foliage.

Their extreme vertical aspect makes them a decorative must for shallow pool/bog designs; while their primitive aspect makes them a favorite in very contemporary garden designs--especially as is quite evergreen, persisting all winter if not exposed to excessive windtunnel conditions.

This is regulated as a pernicious weed in some Western states--check with your county agent before ordering this brute of a fern. In our climate this dramatic fern must be situated in full sun and poor soil to survive and flourish, soon failing in shade or fertilized beds. Seldom offered in containers in the nursery trade as tends to dwarf unattractively in pots. Emphatically not a container subject; predictably a brute in any sunny garden. Q: Why do we offer this? A: Ken loves weeds. Or: digging this character from the front beds builds character.
