Pot Sizes, Plant Sizes, Warranties

Unless specified, we ship established starter plants typically in 2 3/4" to 3 1/2" plastic pots; some items such as Hoyas, some Bromeliads, Epiphyllums and Rhipsalis are sent as mossed unrooted cuts (as they travel and reestablish best this way); dormant bulbs may be shipped out of pots depending on the season ordered. Often dormant bulbs are shipped in the pot in which they have been growing. We will write "dormant" on the label of this pot, if this be the case. Various hardy items may be shipped in liter size pots. No items are shipped totally bareroot. Typically, foreign orders must be washed & mossed, depending on the country, and require special shipping charges as well as special paperwork. If you are placing an order from outside the contental U.S. please be aware that a Phytosanitary Certificate and and Endangered Species (C.I.T.E.S) Certificate may be necessary.

Warranties: We warranty that our plants will be free of bugs and true to name as far as we know from our research and sources. We guarantee that the plants will arrive to you in healthy condition and will be shipped usually ready for repotting. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to grow the plants you purchase from us. We cannot give a guarantee that a year later your plant will be growing and happy. Call us if you have any problems within ten days after you receive them. Also, call us at any time during our phone hours for culture question. We will try to help. With as many species of plants and flowers that we offer, we have no idea whether you will be able to grow them successfully. That is part of the challenge of horticulture. Many plants we offer do take regular care, and take no extraordinary care. Some of them we have gone to great extremes to bring in from all over the world to offer to the garden hobbyist. Some of these plants (although not all) can be a challenge to grow. We usually recommend a plant room, grow lights or a greenhouse for these.Use us as your source for those plants that you cannot find anywhere else. In many instances we are the only mailorder and internet source.

Of course, our garden supplies are guaranteed to arrived unbroken. That really goes without saying (but we will say it here anyway).

General Shipping Costs

If you do not use or online Shopping Cart (which is the easiest way to order), please remember the following when you write out your order:

  • Your full shipping address for U.P.S. Service, Federal Express or Post Office
  • Your mailing address for invoices, correspondance, catalogues etc.
  • Your phone, either during the day or early evening
  • Your credit card # including the expiration date for the card
  • The stock number of each book, collection, or plant in our lists
  • The number and cost of each item you wish to order
  • The totals of the number of plants times cost of plants
  • The appropriate postage costs (base cost plus item costs)
  • The total cost (plants and postage totalled)

The postage costs are computed in the following way. Start with $8.50 for Ground Service or $9.50 for Air Service. To this amount (the Base Charge) add 1.20 for each plant ordered for Air Service or .70 for Ground Service and/or the stated amount for books and collections as given in their descriptions. This is a fairly quick way of arriving at the cost of shipping for the items you order. Quick & simple. If you are ordering items from our Garden Art division, you must wait for confirmation on shipping charges. The Shopping Cart does not necessarily add the extra shipping charges correctly. You will have to wait for a confirming email.Your confirmation Email or letter will also take in account any Federal Express or U.P.S. surcharges. With the price of gasoline at this time, we are sure that our delivery services will up their charges to us at times. Be aware, that small orders with one plant still start off at about 10.00 with Federal express. Thus, it is economical valid to order at least two to three plants. Our minimum order is still 10.00 for the plants PLUS postage. Thus the average small order usually runs at least $21.00. If we suggest that Air Service is needed and you refuse to use Air service, we will not guarantee that the plant will necessarily arrive in good shape. We have shipped plants for years and we know what shipping method is the best. Our plant prices are very reasonable; we don't try to hide the cost of shipping in the cost of the plant. Remember also, that we buy boxes, pay packers, and incur a lot of different costs to get your plants to you safely.

For Collections, the charges are easily computed also. By Ground, a 5 plant collection is an extra 3.50 and a 10 plant collection is an extra 7.00. For Air Service (whether by Post Office or U.P.S.) a 5 plant collection is an extra 5.00 and a 10 plant collection is an extra 9.00. This is of course in addition to the Base Charge--no charges for each individual plant, just the special shipping charge for each collection. This saves you a bit of money on collections.

Shipping Charges and Order Forms

Shipping Charges. Online shipping will be added automatically if you use our Shopping Cart for plant orders.. Since this is an automatic system, shipping charges may be altered slightly in the office, particularly, if you order Home and Garden items or books (and you will be notified by email or mail). No credit card charges are made online. We take a look at your order when it arrives and judge final availability and type your order officially in the offices here on our computers. After this process, you receive either a final email or a final confirmation by U.S. mail with the final invoice. If you order internnationally using the Shopping Cart, the shipping charges for your order when typed in the office will be adjusted for International Shipping. Again, the Shopping Cart mechanism is automatic and does not catch special charges like these. Some statuary and supplies items on orders will have the shipping rates adjusted in the office from the internet Shopping Cart charges also. Gift Certificate orders will have the Shipping Charges deleted when the final order is typed.

Shipping Times and Order Fulfillment

Generally, plants are shipped when ready or at best time for planting. During ambient weather conditions, we try to ship generally in a four to eight week period for plant orders. With our new Email System, you usually receive a second Email after check the order over and show you the changes from the Shopping Cart System. Please give us your Email if at all possible. Book orders and supply orders usually go out within two weeks or less. If you have a rush order request or need the plant or plants you ordered for an occasion or as a gift, you will have to notify us by phone or email when you place your order. In these cases (if the order is for a smaller number of plants or for items that are not out of season or temporarily out of stock) we may be able to accommodate such rush requests. We do not ship during extreme weather. Low temperatures can cause problems with the plants. We grow many species of plants (more than many other nurseries) and some items are always in short supply. Thus, the Glasshouse Works must be the ones to decide when shipment is best made. During January and February we sometimes have to stop shipping entirely. We always inform you in your confirmation Email or letter if there will be unusual delay in shipment. Do not order if you cannot wait for an unusual or rare item to finish before shipment is made. Plants are not like computer parts, pots, fertilizers or other inanimate objects; they are living things and we continually work to propagate and have them ready for sale. But there can be delays. We usually ship the order if it is under ten plants, when ALL the plants are ready on that order. If an item is out of stock at time of delivery, you will be given a credit slip on your next order. Larger orders may sometimes be shipped in several shipments and items backordered for shipment when ready. Orders shipped on a rush basis will be shipped at the customer's risk and may have minor substitutions or credits given. Some plants can be shipped throughout the year; while other orders can be shipped only during their particular seasons of the year. We do answer emails or inquiries concerning order status! You can Email us from almost any page where is says either "Inquire about Your Order" or "Track your Order"

Your order is important to us; thus, we will answer your Emails and give you updates, if you should need them. Some orders are obviously immediately ready and often go out in two to three weeks when weather is warm. Other orders include plants that need to either be started for your order, transferred from one of our other greenhouses, or shipped at the appropriate time of year for that plant. If you order a very unsual plant and we confirm the order with a particular shipping date and then later want it earlier, this sometimes may not be possible. Do not order if you cannot wait a a rather rare item. Again, we want to stress that you can email us at any time to inquire on the status of your order.

Miscellaneous Comments

In some categories (rhipsalis, epiphyllums and hoyas primarily), the plants are priced as unrooted cutting (URcut). These are shipped sphagnum moss and in small pots to travel well. These are quite easily rooted. Prices would have to be higher on rooted plants of these items. If you want these items rooted you have to be prepared for a longer wait and a possible higher cost.

All pots are shipped small plastic bags with rubber bands around them to prevent loss of moisture in travelling and to prevent soil falling away from the roots.. Some exceptions are made with extreme succulents.

If you order dormant bulbs they will arrive without leaves. If this is upsetting to you, please order plants which do not have dormant cycles. Dormant bulbs are mostly shipped in the pot in which they were groing when they went dormant. If you have special shipping requirements, please include these on your order. The Online order form has a special section for notes. Please use it. The confirmation you receive from us by U.S. post office may have special notes on it and will have updated information beyond the automatic email you receive from the Shopping Cart system. . Please read it when you receive it and hold onto this letter and copy of the order until you receive your plants.
